I am mad at my doctor about pain medication!!!

It seems like I am getting screwed over left and right. This month when I saw my doc, he drastically changed the number of pain pills I could take. He took me down from 4 to 1, without even saying anything to me about it. Today, I had surgery. They gave me a script for pain pills, but, for some reason, my doctor has to ok me getting them. This is the weekend. I just had surgery. I am in PAIN! This is all tearing me down and really stressing me out. I don't know what to do. sad

Where did you have the surgery? I would get ahold of the hospital administrator and tear a new one. That is rediculous. The surgeon who done your surgery should be the one to decide what kind of pain control you get for it.

Did the doctor say why he cut your pain meds down? Was it the pharmacy where you usually go that isn't filling the prescription? What kind of pain medication do you take? Maybe he should have tapered you down instead of going from four to one a day. This just isn't right.

The best thing that you can do right now is try to relax. If you have to go through the weekend without extra meds, you are really going to be hurting. But being stressed isn't going to help anything. It is just going to make the pain worse. I hope that you can get ahold of your doctor. Let us know what happens.

No fair! But by all means, try not to stress more than you have to. And yeah, I would complain like all **#^ too. In a calm way, of course :)

Read over your papers from your surgery. Seems like I remember signing a paper that showed my rights and it said I had the right to pain control for my surgery. It might be different for different hospitals, I don't know.

Thanks you guys for all your encouragement. I really appreciate it. I am going to call the weekend number tomorrow and see what is going on. They shouldn't be denying my meds. My insurance WILL cover it, so I really don't understand what is going on. But I am going to find out. And Monday, I am going to start looking for a new doctor, because I feel the way he decreased my pain meds was really irresponsible.

I do hope you get some help soon. Yes, it's not fair but I'd sure like to know what is behind the doctors decision for changing your meds. I'm guessing either he is scared of an investigation or his lawyer is throwing fear into him. Either way he owes it to his patients to give them the best health care he possibly can and that does include pain control! Any doctor who drops the dose like that and doesn't explain why is a coward and needs to come clean as to what's up. I'd be writing to your state medical board and also a patient advocate group can help you. All hospitals have those to help anyone who has had a short or long stay. Your surgery had to be connected to some medical facility and that's where I'd start complaining. You need to write a real letter though. Phone calls get ignored fast. Where I get good results is to go to the TOP! Find the name and mailing address of the hospital admin and write directly to them. I've done this type of thing before when there was a problem and I got immediate and great action. No problems ever again.

Start finding names and address...in fact, hubby can do this job for you! Then get to writing a polite but clear letter to whomever you deem appropriate. To make a good letter of complaint start with a polite and complimentary sentence or two. Then explain the problem. Lastly tell them what you want to see happen to solve the problem. Thanks them in advance for their attention to this matter. That's it! and you'll get results.

This seems to be what's hapening all around lately. My sister has fibro way worse than I do and she had her kidney removed in January. They would not give her the normal pain meds she takes every day - they expected that the spinal block was going to take care of the horrible chest and arm pain she gets regularly. It was terrible, she had to fight for it! Fight for what you need! (although this is difficult to do when you are in paina nd exhausted!) I'm thinking of you and sending you hugs....

Well, my script that my surgeon wrote has finally gone through. It turns out it was a problem with the insurance. So I am happy about that. But I still don't know what is wrong with my normal doctor. When I asked the nurse about the change in my dosage, she said that he had said that because I didn't want to continue the Suboxone that he wanted me to mainly rely on my Lyrica. What I don't get is that if he wanted me to do that, why didn't he do that from the moment I went back on the pain meds. And I think it was really irresponsible of his to lower it so drastically. And he never talked to me about it. I had to find out from the nurse. It's all ridiculous. The other doctor I was seeing in this office is a lot better. I am going to try to see if I can start seeing him again, but if I can't, then I am just going to find a new doctor because all of this is so stupid and insulting.

I wish there were some way to transfer our pain to the uncaring doctors for 24 hours at a time. They could take each Fibro's pain, one at a time, a new one each day and then we would see some attitude adjustment!

That would be nice. I don't know what his problem is. He doesn't listen or really seem to care all that much, and he does things that involved me and my treatment without talking to me about them.

Oh it just brings back memories for me from not to long ago with the stupid pain mgmt doctor. I'm so very sorry you are having to deal with this. If they could just feel that pain....it really is hurtful when you can tell they are not listening or they dont' believe it. I know I remember when I asked my doctor about something one time and she said...I don't think your in that much pain...I was like how the #$% do you know how much pain I am in? That was a long time ago and she is so much better now. We are on point and I'm happy about that. But I just want to say sorry and I hope that you can get a new doc and relief too!!!

Hi Sassy I'm truely sorrow to hear you are suffering. I feel half of the battle we face with Fibromyalgia is finding a good and understanding doctor that will do his or her best to help us. Maybe it's worth looking to see if there is another gp in your doctors office that understands the nature of your condition better and that you form a benefiting relationship with them where they will talk you through changes to you medication and where you decided on medication changes together. A lot of the time the doctors think because they are the doctor that they know best. This is not often true. I hope you pain gets better for you.

A good doctor is half the battle. I have finally found one who sems to care about me. He does not like to hand out pain meds but at present i can live with that. It is winter here and the pain level has just jumped through the roof. But I am going back to see him now on a regular 2 weeks so he can keep and eye on my pain levels.

That is good news, my doctor is exactly the same and actively encourages me to pursue other avenues like homeopathy and relaxation that could benefit me.
