Hi Mary,
Yes... my fibromyalgia did start after a traumatic event. My dad passed away suddenly. I was very close to him and he was only in his fifties. A couple of months later, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
Were you just diagnosed? It is all very overwhelming and scary at first. The hardest part is accepting that your life IS going to change. You will no longer be able to do everything you once did. Scrubbing the floor is something I know is still beyond my ability to do, and I feel like I have improved considerably in the past year.
As far as pain meds go, I took Ultram for quite some time, until it seemed it no longer helped me. Now I just take ibuprofen and Tylenol when I need it, but prefer to try White Willow Bark capsules first since they are easier on my body. What worked for me might not work for you or others, but then again, some of it might. I simply try to eat as naturally as possible. I totally avoid sodas, refined sugar, and white flour. I severely limit fast food and convenience/packaged food. I make it a priority to get all my fruit & veggie servings (through a supplement, since I don't like many fruits & veggies otherwise ). I work constantly to improve our indoor air quality, and I use all non-toxic cleaning & personal care products. All this has helped me considerably.
I have heard of others being able to find relief through the guaifenesin protocol, through working with their docs to lower their TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), and increasing their Vitamin D. I think it is well worth each fibromyalgia patient looking into diet, lifestyle, and other factors for themselves to see if they can see any improvement in their condition.
Hope you feel better soon.
