Hi, and welcome! Things are always far more frightening when it is happening to our child, isn't it?!! A sedimentation rate shows if there is any inflammation in the body. Usually other tests are run at the same time. A viral infection can cause a high sedimentation rate, from what I've read. I'm not a doctor but I hope you can relax a little. Your child has been fighting a virus, you said, and this could be all this high sedimentation rate test is showing. Everything seems to be coming back fine.
I remember when my first child was getting sick all of the time. She was just a few months old and she had to have a gamma globulin test. THAT frightened me. Then there was the time my youngest, four years old at the time, was hospitalized for over a week with a temperature of 105 degrees and she had a stiff neck. She couldn't even hold Tylenol down so they had to put her in tepid baths to bring the fever down. They ran all the tests and couldn't find a problem so I just signed papers for her to be sent to a children's specialty hospital and also signed for a spinal tap. Before all of this came to pass, the doctor found the problem....strep! They ran all tests but strep because her throat wasn't sore or red! He did it as a last resort. She was back home running around like crazy in three days.
So, things can look bad but there could be a simple explanation. Just try to calm down and follow doctor's orders. I'm glad she is acting her "normal" self. That is a great sign! Let us know how the retest goes, okay? We really do care.
