Has anyone else felt really bad after dental surgery?

smurf Fibrohugs all. Just wondered if something like an extraction would result in a bad flare. Had extraction Friday morning and after three hours I was getting palpitations, really sleepy and dizzy weakness. It is gradually miinimizing but I have to go back for a lot of dental work and this has actually scared me off a little, wondering if I am sensitive to either the injection or the actual trauma of the dental work. Been sleeping around the clock but I so need to get my gums and teeth fixed. Any advice greatly appreciated as always thanks all hugs

I always feel tired after the dentist, even just getting my teeth cleaned! Tired and spacey. And the more extensive the procedure, the worse the effects. Holding your mouth open and involuntarily tensing other muscles for long periods is hard on us, too. Of course, we feel everything so intensely, lucky us!!

Hi there...Just wanted you to know that I had a similar reaction after getting several shots of novacaine for a root canal.  I now ask for carbocaine...it has no epinepherine(sp?) in it.

Thank you I am going to see my doctor before I go back to dentist its really shaken me up was out of hours doctors at weekend. Hugs girls

Like Donna, I don't take novacaine.  They have another that works just as good.  When I had novacaine, I my heart would race and get palpitations.  This, then, led to anxiety and a myriad of other symptoms.  Hopefully this is the problem you had.  Try to relax and not worry about it.  The anxiety can make you miserable.

I agree with Sherrine and Donna. The Novacaine can cause heart palpitations which can then lead to anxiety/stress. At least for me, stress causes fibro flares, upping pain A LOT! As far as the dental surgery, 20 years ago and 2 years after I was diagnosed with fibro, I was diagnosed with stage IV periodontal disease and ended up losing all but four of my teeth! I was in my 30s then. Long story short, I had a dentist that didn't recognize periodontal disease and I had very little pain. Dentist kept telling me I had "a" gum infection, treated me with antibiotics, and on and on...this went on for a long time, leading up to the stage IV disease. I went through several gum surgeries and having all my teeth pulled, which were done in stages, the first being TEN. I was put out for it. Through ALL of it, I did really well, very little pain. Try not to stress over it. Make sure you ask for something other than Novacaine and tell them about your fibro, so they can try to make you more comfortable in the chair. That was the worst of it for me...the long appointments in the chair leading to pain in my back muscles.

Thank you for this post, I never put two and two together. I get the racing pulse and the heart pulps. So I just keep an eye on my pulse rate. If I count over 100 for my heart beat a minute, I tell the nurse and tell her I'm tacky. You have to inform your dentist of any underlying conditions with the heart. I had to get permission from my primary care to have dental work due to my heart murmer.

Novacaine has epinephrine in it, I think....which is adrenaline.  That's why we have that effect on us.  Don't have a clue what happened to my font!

Ditto on the novacaine.  I always request something without novacaine, makes my heart race and makes me totally anxiety ridden.  Don't be afraid to go back.  Just tell your dentist you are sensitive to the novacaine and it shouldn't be any problem for them to give you something else.  Good Luck.  Hope you are feeling better.

Hi All! LIke many of you I definately feel a big flare after Dental work,which Im experiancing right now,I also hate the dentist,but had too much (needed) dental work this month ..1 major filling ,3 smaller ones,2 root canals and 2 crowns..I now feel like a battle zone that lost! Really crappy! I need additional work but had to stop for now..the stress was very high ..and am suffering from refered tooth pain..and mouth sores! My Dentist did not use novicane..there is something else they used which is more gentle..yes it is definately hard on us with CFS and Fybro..a lot of prayer and the need for our bodies to kick over and get well

PS..Forgot to mention 2 extraction! No wonder I feel so bad!! All within 1 month and a half..Wishing you all Wellness and God Bless!
