More thinking aloud - hope no one minds.
Have you had those moments that Joseph Campbell refers to as being helped by unseen helping hands. Clearly, I am meant to investigate this idea of the gut connection because everything I see and read is pointing me stronly in this direction. Just now, PBS (television service in the US) was running a program from Dr. Mark Hyman called The Ultra-Mind Solution.
drhyman.com/about/about-dr-mark-hyman/ I only saw the last 10 minutes, but it looks worthy of further investigation. After the program, while he was discussing the show with the PBS presenters, he mentioned one little boy whom he was treating who had autism. The boy had a profoundly bloated stomach. Dr. Hyman mentioned that digestive issues are very typical in autism. The doc found out the boy was infected with giardia (sp?). The giardia had inflamed his intestines - and this inflammation and infection cause inflammation (I think this is what he said) in the brain as well. Once they eradicated the giardia infection the autism became much less of an issue! Again - the gut comes into play with illnesses that stump so many.
I have been wondering too if inflammation is playing a role in this for me - is that why daily sour/tart cherries seem to make me feel much better? They're used in whole form, or the juice of tart cherries, for arthritis treatment. I have not been diagnosed with arthritis. Although I never understood WHY they help me, I've been glad they do. Maybe they work on other inflammatory problems in addition to arthritis type inflammation? I wonder if they help with intestinal inflammation? So curioius.
