Good topic!
I hate my bed with a passion. I dream of a new mattress. However, I can tell you a few things that don't work so well.
(1) I bought a synthetic feather bed. I thought it would be like my synthetic down pillows. Wrong. The pillows are great. The "featherbed" clumps up after you own it for some length of time. I have to shake it and fluff it often, and it is still lumpy. So I bought an egg crate foam topper ...
(2) Egg crate foam topper is almost not noticeable once you put your weight on it. I'm light weight - but that thing is not terribly useful. It only marginally helps. Mine is only like 2" thick - definitely not thick enough.
What am I interested in? I really want to go test a memory foam mattress. Just for testing, I'll probably go lay down on a tempurpedic in a showroom, however, they're too expensive for me to ever dream of owning. I did some googling and found some American companies actually make foam mattresses right here and they claim they do not off-gas toxic chemicals like the Chinese mattresses. I've heard even Tempurpedic off-gasses. This week, I discovered that both the Walmart and Sam's Club web sites have American Made foam mattresses for sale - but they do not carry them in their stores. The ones in store are made in China. The american ones are dirt cheap - like $200-$450. I figure even if they don't last many years (it says they should last 5) that might be a fair investment. BUT - I have no first hand knowledge - YET. I read a lot of reviews, and about
80% love these mattresses and say they're comfy and do NOT smell. Then about
10% say they're hard as rocks, or too soft, or that they smell forever. Is it a case of manufacturing inconsistency? Possibly. But just throwing this out there in case it is useful. I REALLY want to try one. I'm sick to death of hurting just sitting up in bed reading. *shakes fist at my mattress* Oh! And make sure that it has at least 3" of the memory foam on the top of the thicker bottom layer of
open cell foam. The
open cell foam can feel hard as a brick - the memory foam is what you need for comfort. But it is tricky, I have read, to find a memory foam that is supportive and soft enough at the same time.
PS: Also - before buying a mattress that is pillow-topped, go test one in a store. I find that the "buttons" or depressions where they are tufted hurt like crazy for me.
