Now I have a excelent reason to write that,

My DIL had a operation to have her broken arm and smashed elbow repaired. Now the operation on THURSDAY morning went well. She was very impressed with the hospital and staff. That was until Friday at 2pm when she returned to her ward after having xrays taken. Upon going to her bed she discovered that they had put someone else in that bed.

When she asked what was going on she was told she was to go home. Now that proved a problem, her mobile[cell] phone was gone and she did not know anyones phone numbers as finding anyone at home was going to be a problem. So she go a cab home which cost her $130 but instead of dending her home with any meds she had nothing. How they could do what they had I have no idea i mean it was a elbow replacement.

She rang our home phone, knowing the pain I suffer that I might be able to give her something to help until she could find a way of getting pain relief.

I have to admit my DH and I where both ready to tear into that hospital.

This morning she tells me her mother rang the hospital and chewed them out and they sent the meds etc to her by couirer.

I'm so sorry. That seems to be a common theme with hospitals. My mom was supposed to come home from the hospital on a Friday morning after major, major surgery for stage 4 ovarian cancer. My sister called me at 8:30 pm and told me that they had just released her and they were on the way to my house. I didn't have a bed ready or anything; I was preparing for the next day when she was SUPPOSED to be released. When she arrived, she had NO meds for pain, nausea (she was on chemo, too), etc. I was livid. I called her doctor at home and gave him a piece of my mind (he was the one who authorized an evening release and sent her home with nothing). Fortunately, we have a 24 hour pharmacy, and we were able to get her some meds. It was horrible.

I hope your DIL is resting comfortably and has a speedy recovery.

That's terrible that something like that could happen.  But, this is a good example why we have to be pro-active in our own health care.  I know I wouldn't have left that hospital without a script from the doctor.  I also wouldn't have left in a cab. 

 

I also take phone numbers when I go to the hospital.  In the hospitals I've been in, they take down a lot of info before I'm admitted and one of them is who to call in case of an emergency.  I think I would have stayed there until someone could come and get me.

 

Nevertheless, the hospital was remiss with this "surprise" release from the hospital and I'd definitely report it.  Call the hospital administrator.  I've done that before!  wink    After all, they would have no jobs without OUR income!

It is crazy how they release people so soon after a major surgery. I spent the night
in the hospital after my back surgery and I was to be released the next morning.
My nurse knew I was in no shape to leave. I was so dizzy and nauseas. She fought
to keep me there and won.

Before anyone is released the patient should have post op instructions and a script.
The patient should be released only if there is a responsible party there to accompany the patient home. Ooooh, it makes me so mad that healthcare has no
respect for patients.

Hope your DIL has a quick, wonderful recovery!

I am so sorry what you DIL went through. It makes me wonder if they have waiting lists for the beds. Get them in as fast as possible and out as fast as they can. Money, money money..........................................................

It is very frustrating, I am sure. And that cab fee. The hospital should have to pay that. I can't belive what they did to her. I am glad taht your husband called them and gave them a good talking to. Or whoever did. This is rediculous.

I am glad that she is home now and comfortable. But there could have been a better way to do this.

So sorry, Kathy. That is outrageous.

In a less dire situation, I experienced the same attitude. At noon, the day after my gallbladder surgery, a nurse bursts in and almost yells at me, "When are you going home? I have an ambulance coming in and I need to get you out of here!" I wish I hadn't been so dopey, I would have said - How the *^&% should I know? No one's come in to talk to me, see if I can walk, NOTHING!

But of course I didn't.

Wow Kathy, that is unreal that a hospital could be so uncaring. That is unforgivable, here at our hospital they will not release you unless you have a responsible adult accompanying you. We wouldnt even be allowed to take a taxi by ourselves. They are like this with the same day surgery unit too. And to send her home without anything for pain is inhumane. im sure glad her mother called and complained for her. Im so sorry she had to go through this.

OMG.. if anyone ever did that crap to me or my daughter I would be cackling like a wet hen! They probably billed the insurance for half a day for that darn bed now get double for kicking you out and billing another insurance for the same time!

Glad she got her meds but still.. I would be looking for reimbursement for that cab!

My DIL was in so much pain and so out of it still from all the drugs they had poured into her she just wanted to get home. But this is after she sat on the floor at the hospital crying in pain, trying to find phone numbeers so she could call one of us to get her. They would not call her mother for her but they would call a cab.
What is the reasoning behind that.

That is so horrible and I'm so sorry she had to go through all of that.  I hope she is doing better and will be praying for a speedy and full recovery for her!
