ACNE??? AT 59 YEARS OF AGE???

Anyone else? I cannot believe this. Honestly, I've always had "stray" zits, but recently, well it's ridiculous...I feel like I'm 16 again. I do have rosacea, is that it? Someone else told me it could be from weaning off of SSRIs...just wondering if anyone else is dealing with this, yet another thing???

I have never heard of this as a withdrawal symptom, but you never do know. Stranger things have happened. I hope that you can find something to help you. What about the acne meds that you see on tv. Would that help? Do you have sensitive skin too? I wondered because I do and sometimes my face gets red like rosecea but I don't know if I have it or not.

Oh yes! I just went to the dermatologist. Adult acne and a basal cell cancer. I'm using Tazorac cream which is making my skin peel off. I never had skin problems as a teenager but at almost 65-yikes. smhair Mohs surgery for the cancer in October. Don't know how long I have the peeling skin. I have mostly whiteheads(which is what I thought the cancer was) and a few red cysts. I thought the whiteheads were from all the sunscreen I wear. Maybe not.

I never had acne as a teenager but at 19 or 20 I had it really, really bad. The purplish red marks that never came to a head (gross, I know). I wash my face and use astringent regularly but my Derm said it was not from dirt but it is coming from within. Retinol cream did not help. Come to think of it most of the problem went away after the hysterectomy 9 years ago at the age of 40. I think I had hormone problems for a long, long time but not because of the zit issue.

Now I get the occasional cyst that has to be surgically removed, 2 so far and 2 more small ones appearing.

When I was younger an antibiotic called erythromycin helped a lot.

No real answers but I hope you find some answers.

Denise, the cream I'm using is a retinol I think. I'm wondering if it is really doing any good. It makes my face burn and skin is peeling everywhere on my face. It looks horrible and I can't wear makeup because that just emphasizes the flaky skin shakehead I don't think any of this is related to fibro or any meds I'm taking but I wonder what is causing it.

Is it possibly a photosensitive rash? If so - plaquenil has helped me alot. I started getting what looked like ringworm on my face (in the mask area). Anyway you could see if sunscreen helps that way you will know if it is photosensitivity (this also causes flakey skin so you'll need to find a moisturizer) The best moisturizer I've found is Wal-Marts version of Cetaphil.

I am 37 and dealing with acne really bad right now.  I have always had occasional pimples, especially before my period but I have never in my life had acne like this. It is on my temples really bad and forehead, then around my jawline.   I even had a person where I work make a comment about my "acne situation", what manners, I tell ya...... I have tried a few things I have picked up from Wal Mart but nothing is seeming to help.  I am kicking around trying ProActive.

Libby, I forgot about Proactive.  It worked wonders for me.  If you get it my mail make sure you don't forget to cancel as it gets very expensive.  I found a kiosk in the mall where I ended up buying it.  I bought a larger size with a pump that is supposed to be for the back but I used it on my face.  Lasted forever and worken absolutely great!!  worked better than anything else I tried.

I don't know, Miriam, I've had adult acne at times, and it just seems to have finally worn it self out (now that I have no more hormones :)  Hope it rights itself soon...that's no fun!

I've had Mohs surgery twice, and I feel for you.  The first was at age 46, on my nose - the numbing shot was bad, and I wasn't expecting such pain.  The second was a few years later, on my temple.  This time, I was prepared for the worst, but I hardly felt it - the doctor said it was just because that area isn't nearly as sensitive.  I don't want to scare you, but I wish someone had prepared me for the 1st one. 

I've tried all the peeling creams to keep the precancers at bay, and can only use them for a few nights before the pain keeps me awake.  (Oh, the joys of being a redhead!)  When I was a 34-year-old mom of 3 with a new baby, a dermatologist had me use Efudex cream, and after a week or so my face became a thick, bright red mask and stayed that way for weeks.    shocked   It looked like I'd 2nd-degree-burned my entire face, and it HURT and itched and kept me awake like crazy.  What possessed me to not cancel my helping day at preschool, I don't know, but those kids didn't want to get anywhere near me!

I was bothered with acne during my teenage years, and still have it at 51. I think that mine is due to horomones. I know that I have excessive amounts of estrogen, and will be having a hysterectomy next month. Hopefully, it will correct this, and a lot of other problems that I have been having. I have not tried otc creams since I was a teen, as I know that they can cause over drying of the skin.

Never had much acne as a teen but today, age 50, I was dealing with it on a daily basis. A different spot every day and as soon as it clears it's back again.

One thing to be careful with, I just figured it out and feel stupid. BUT my face is beginning to clear now.

Many of the medications we take cannot be mixed with asprin. My face was breaking out and I was using cleanser after cleanser to try to make sure my face was clean and medically treated. This is when I decided to read the ingrediants on the cleansers I was using and found that the base ingredient to many of the cleansers is what..... yes asprin... so I called my pharmasist and doctor to discuss and it was determined that , yes, I was having a drug interaction that was causing more break outs and in some spots a severe sore, not just your ordinary pimple or rash. I also have Lupus, and the mask I carry on my face most of the time was beginning to get more severe and raw....

So..be careful and watch the ingredients on your cleansers.... It made all the difference for me.

As indicated in the package insert of Celexa, acne is an infrequent side effect of this medication.

It is hard to predict if other SSRI's will cause this problem.  You may want to discuss with your physician the possible risk for acne and benefits of these medications in treating your panic.

I found this article, knowing you were on Celexa.  I also found a page that says it can happen during w/d.  Don't know if that's what's going on with you but it could be a possibility.

 

Remember that disgusting Clearasil we used when we were young?????  Brown pasty goop that was soooo obvious?  Yikes!

I'm 55, had a total hysterectomy at 44, and am currently on the lowest dosage of HRT....

I've always had some acne... Oxy10 is part of daily skin care!

It also gets worse when I'm under stress..my skin just gets more oily and I tend to break out more...are you currently under more stress than usual?

I am 59 and went through menopause at 56 and not on any HRT so I don't think it is hormonal. I did, however withdraw from Celexa, very slowly, over two months and have not taken any in about four weeks. More stress? No, not really. I am washing my face now at least two X a day and sometimes 3. I have Metrogel which is an antibiotic gel which I use infreqently for rosacea and I now am using it more. Maybe this is all part of the rosacea? I hate to start with yet another doc, a dermatologist. Thank you all for your input. Makes me feel better to know I am not alone. Who would have thought??? Acne at 59??? geesh!

I'm 58 and will get the occasional zit, usually right before some special occasion. I will use On the Spot
by Neutrogena and it pretty much will zap a zit.
