I'm used to being stiff when sitting for a while or sleeping, but lately I'm also getting sharp, stabbing pains in my lower back. Teh stiffness is getting so bad, that I cry out when I try to turn over in bed.  Another symptom of the wonderful illness? I know the stiffness is, but geesh is it supposed to hurt this bad?

Are you doing any gentle stretching exercises during the day? That might help a bit.
But yes, I'm that stiff. It almost feels like rigor mortis sets in. There have been times when the stiffness goes away for awhile, and I don't have a clue why. Then it comes back and, again, I don't know why.

That's exactly what I would call it! i'm on the move all day-I'm a tech in a doctors office, and I never sit down unless it's my lunch break. It does get better with movement. And it back again at night. Thee have been nights when it's woken me up.

Hi saintfan, I have been having the same problem with my lower back lately and yes it definitely does disturb the sleep. And yes moving around during the day definitely loosens it up. Just wanted you to know that I understand.

You've got to keep moving with this illness.  We get stiff at night because we don't move much.  I can't roll over at night because of the pain.  So, I sleep in the same position all night.  Makes my bed easy to make in the morning, though!  tongue

Keep moving, keep hydrated and when you are resting use moist heat. yeah Keep your electrolytes up, sometimes low potassium can make your muscles tight.

Eat bannanas..drink OJ and feel better soon. tongue

For many years (and now its back again, especially with my knee problems), I could hardly get up out of a chair. It was unbelievably painful. But once I got going, I was fine. Its was so strange. It was very embarrassing, like at a restaurant. when it was time to leave. It was sooooooooooo painful just getting up. If I stopped moving and sat down for just a couple minutes, it would be excruciatingly painful to get up. It just didn't make sense to me!
Makes me believe in one of the FMS theories about a problem with our muscle metabolism.
I have developed knee problems, though, and it makes me wonder if that stiffness was a fore-warning of the knee problems.
Who knows. I get weary trying to make sense of all this!

Oh, Cathy, you sound just like me.  I don't have the knee problems...constantly, that is....but I sure know about getting up to leave a restaurant.  I go on day bus trips sometimes and when  you've been sitting for several hours and then everyone rushes to get off the bus, oh, my!  The pain is horrible and I hold my breath, tense up, and move.  It kills me but then it shakes off in a couple of minutes and I'm not as sore.  I really hate it when we are in a restaurant and then the group gets up to leave.  I'm trying to stand and stretch but the groups goes on and I'm always trying to catch up.  I try my best not to be limping out of the restaurant but that's not always possible.  Not the most fun part of my day trips!

I've had 2 patients today make ugly comments about my limp. I've tried to hold my chin up, but I guess Im so frustrated with constantly hurtin that I let my last patient get to me and I ended up crying. Somedays I want to wear a sign around my back that says I have an illness too!

You know, Saint, if we limp it's out of pain.  We both don't want to limp and seem embarrassed by it.  Why?  We shouldn't be embarrassed by it.  We deal with a lot and still live our lives with strength and courage.  I can't believe someone would say something to you about limping.  I hope it was out of concern.  If not, consider the source.

 

So, I'm not going to be embarrassed about it anymore.  At least I can walk.  AND, it's what is inside of us that counts anyway.  So, let's smile, live each day to the fullest, and ignore rude people.  Everybody else does!  cool

You are right Sherrine. I was just to the point where I couldn't go anymore today and I let someones snide comment bring me way down. Thankfully I can walk, and my cane is now my friend.
