Hi everyone I have just been prescribed Gabapentin 100mg.
I read some reviews and they were not good, the side effects are really bad.
Has anyone taken this drug and how did you feel?

Currently taking Morphine 5mg and 15 mg slow release. This is not working for pain at all, desperate for some relieve .

My name is lisa I am a "lymie" but visiting here as my one dr"s says it is fibro I have/ I just started gabenetin 300 mg 3 times a day. I think it helps . I'll check back and see how you are doing your dose seems low but who knows? gabentinin is for nerve pain and if you are like me you have nerve pain, seems a real stepdown from morphine BUT I do think this targets my particiular pain, I have enough of it :)

I took Gabapentin 300mg for a long time and it was effective at first with no side effects. At the same time I was on mega-doses of oxycontin. After several years and going through many doctors I found that the Gabapentin did not help, nor did the oxy. Once I found the Rheumy that really knew what I needed, he changed my medicatons. The Gabapentin(Neurontin) targets the nerve pain. I am now on Savella and Lyrica and am doing well. Gabapentin worked for me for aobut three years before I had to change. On the other hand, my dad has been on it for the last 10 years in low dosage and is still running strong at age 79. What works for some of us does not work for others.

Hi, I started on 300mgs 3x a day. I think it was too much too soon. It made me somewhat "loopy" and I didn't really notice any relief BUT, everyone of us is different. Good Luck

Gabapentin helped my pain, but I gained a LOT of weight, so I stopped it.

I take the 300 mg, was supposed to up it to 3x a day and just couldn't handle it. It put me to sleep, so now I just take one at night with my other meds and it does help me sleep.

I take 200 mg three times a day.  Helps keep the pain down.  I have no side effects.  I am very happy with it and it's generic so with my insurance it only costs $5.  I won't say it completely makes me have no pain ever.  But many days I have no pain, and when I do it is less in duration and severity.

I am with Snue, I think if I get it in before it 'runs" out it does indeed help, create a miracle no, when I am flaring I will take a darvicot or a vicadin as well. I am interested in this nerve pain thing I think traveler is right, i think its her that said its indicative of neuro lyme, if I had ins I'd be curious what an mri would show. thanks for all the thoughts, 2 brains are better than one and in my case I would need 3!!!

hi bella, iv been taking gabapentin now for just over a year and i started on 100mg per day and slowly went up to 600mg 4 times a day. for the first 2 weeks it made me tired but i was happy with that as i couldnt sleep due to pain.after that the sleepiness wore off. then i thot it want helping me much but when i took a tummy bug and couldnt take them for 4-5 days i found out just how much they were helping so iv never missed a day since then. im also on a patch called butrans and tablets called dyhidracodene / paracetamol i am still in a lot of pain most days and i still flare a lot but im trying to learn just what causes my flares.anyway i think anything is worth a try, you might need the morphine put up a little too. just my opinion . i hope it helps you. oh and iv also put on a so much weight that even my dr said to me " youv put on a lot of weight since i saw you last" he made me feel great saying that lol. i dint think that it could be the meds but since mt lady said it im now thinking it maybe whats caused my weight gain as i honestly dont eat that much. i hope this doesnt put you off trying it tho as you could be just fine. i wish you great success with it, we all react different to meds. i hope you post and let us know how you get on.

I don't think I'll be touching this drug. The weight gain alone scares me to death. I think that Gabapentin is the same kind of drug as Lyrica, which has the same side effects ( weight gain, )
My Doctor is reluctant to give me Oxycontin or Vicodin, so I'll have to stick with Morphine which really doesn't do much. I think my next step is maybe to go to a Pain Clinic and see what they can do there, I am not getting my hopes high. eyes

I have a friend on gabentonin for about 8 mos and he has lost weight!! looks great/

According to Medscape, only 1-5% of people will gain weight on gabapentin. I'm giving it a try. The potential side effects are a lot less scary than for a lot of drugs, especially the antidepressants like Cymbalta and Savella. I started it last might. 300 mg at night for a week, then add another 300 in the morning for a week, then add another. So far, so good.

Also, regarding the comments on WebMD, I think that people are much more likely to comment about bad reactions than good ones.

Well I just started on Gabapentin on 10/06/10 300 mgs twice a day I'm not sure yet about if it is helping or not but I will keep you posted when I find out.

I take 900mg every 8 hours for severe leg pain and I was taking Embeda 30mg (which is morphene and some other drug mixed) and I did have alot of relief. At first It knocked me out but I built up a tollerance and it doesnt even effect me at all anymore. I can drive and do everything I would normaly do while taking it....It did take me a few months to bult up the tollerance for it though.

I have been extremely nervous about taking Gabapentin due to the possible side effects. I took Cymbalta and thought if I ever get rid of the side effects, I never will take it again! It gave me an "out of body" type feeling that I did not like. I also took Celexa (for anxiety) and it bothered my stomach. So, I have been so reluctant to even try the Gabapentin. I've had the prescription filled for over a week, and today, I took my first dose of Gabapentin at 100mg as needed for muscle/ nerve pain. I'm thankful it is a small dose and can be taken as needed.
I waited anxiously for a "side effect" to take place. I can honestly say, I did not experience any side effects at all. After about 4 hours, I felt some relief in my upper back and neck. Now, it has been 6 hours since taking it, and still no effects.
I have a small body frame, weigh 130 pounds, and have a very sensitive stomach.
I hope my post will help alleviate fear for someone else who is as scared as I was to take it.
I do realize people react differently to meds, but I hope what I've said will help someone at least try to take it once to see how it works for them.

I have been on Gabapentin for over 6 years now and the highest dosage that I was one was 1200mg 3xday. I took that much for over a month, loopy was an easy word for it. I could fall out of my shoes. I am currently taking 300 mg, tablets, 3 x day with no side effects that I notice.
The Morphine that you are taking, watch out. As you increase the dosage more with it, the stranger the things are that happens. I was taking 1-2 tablets, 30 mg each, 3 x day, as much as 180 mg of morphine day. After 2 weeks of that dose, my wife loaded me up and took me to the VA hospital in Nashville TN. Not long after being checked in, (here is the real good part), I was chasing big blue cock roaches around the ER floor. I was close to being locked up. It took a few days but I returned to somewhat normal.

It reduced some of my neuro pain for about 3 months or so. Then it stopped working completely. It did nothing for my muscle or joint pain. Only good thing I can say about it, is that it is cheap.

We do all react differently to things..as well as having fibro , i have a sensitivity to meds..which is. Not cool.

When i try anything i take very low doses and see how it goes..

I'm like Lj: also very sensitive to meds, and I try to either avoid them or take in low doses.

At first, I was prescribed 300 mg capsules of gabapentin. Then, the doctor asked if I would like the 100 mg capsules instead. Yes! I find the 100 mg capsules produce little, if any, side effects, though they do help to "take the edge off," which is often just what I need. I still don't drive while taking even the smallest doses of meds, though.

As an aside, I did find an increase in leg cramps a while back, and read that sometimes gabapentin can cause them, but usually only at higher doses. I'm really not sure if the gabapentin caused the cramping, but I feel much better taking the 100 mg capsules, versus the 300 mg ones. But really, who knows??

Here's something I haven't heard anyone mention. I take Gralise. It is a time released form of gabapentin. I know it worked because I had to get off and go to regular gabapentin for about 6 months. I told the dr I wasn't tdoing well and she contacted my insurance company to get it reinstated. Got it and things improved markedly.

I take 1800 mg every night after dinner. You only take it once a day and it stays in your system long term. No dips in pain coverage. I had no side affects. Of course it is just one part of a treatment plan but in my mind and experience worth trying.

I have just recently began taking gabapentin. So far, no side effects. I have also seen a reduction of my pain! At this point, I am very happy with the results. Hopefully, things will continue this way.
