Allergy to Earrings?

Do any of you have sensitivities to metals?  I can not wear gold, silver, or any type of earrings.  I'm so disappointed because after not wearing earrings for many many years, I decided to buy some beautiful sterling silver earrings that are nickel free.  I thought maybe that was the catch...that it was the nickel that is irratating me!  Nope!  My ears are all infected and I wasted money again! mad  

When I had my c-section, I was told by the nurse that if I ever have to get cut open again, to request that I am sewn shut because I have severe allergic reactions to the surgical steel staples they use.   Geez that was painful getting them removed!

Just wondering if anyone else has this, or if it's just me!

Hi Krista, I am allergic to most types of metal. I cannot wear earrings of any type either, not sure why because I can wear gold and silver as far as rings. I dont wear necklaces either because for some reason they will irratate my neck. I have to buy watches that are non alergenic and that gets to be annoying. I have had the metal staples after surgery and it didnt bother me. I don't really understand why some things bother me and others dont but I do know what it is like to not wear earrings.

I am sensitive to metals, but can wear silver and gold filled. I am sorry that you two can't wear prescious metals either. That must be hard. But at least you know and can avoid them.

Maybe they will come up with plastic earings. You never know with the trends these days. lol...

Shirley...I'm fine with rings also but necklaces sometimes cause me to be a bit rashy/itchy. But it seems like anything that goes through my skin is very bad! Not that I want to go out and pierce my body everywhere or anything, lol, but a simple pair of earrings would be nice! Thanks for your reply!

Yes, I have this problem.  But, it stemmed from when I got my ears pierced in college.  You can develop metal allergies from the procedure.  I now can only wear 14 karat gold or better.  I see so many cute pieces of jewelry out there and it's inexpensive but I get blisters if I wear them.  Bummer!

If you dip your earring backs into clear nail polish, making sure to cover all exposed metal, and let it dry completely, you might be able to wear those earrings again Krista. I've done that before and it worked well. You might have to do it each time you wear them (I'm not sure how long the coating might last for)

For necklaces and bracelets, you can use leather or silk cords instead of chains, and go for beads and pendants - they'll probably work better.

I have developed a sensitivity to metals too. In previous years, I could only wear sterling silver or gold. When I had a C-section in 2006, they used staples and my body didn't like that I the day after I got home from the hospital, it felt like my staples were itching and burning, and I went right to the OB/Gyn to get them removed. They told me that it wasn't infected but there was some sort of seepage going on. It hurt when they got take out but it felt so much better afterwards!
Then, in august of 2009, I fell and broke my wrist. I had to get a pin in my ulna and a plate with screws in my radius. They took the pin out after it was healed, but the plate has to stay in forever. Ever since then I cannot wear most of my sterling silver earrings, they bother me. My husband got me some earrings that are 10K white gold, and even they bother me! It sucks because I like to make jewelry, and I usually use sterling silver wire & stuff because it is cheaper than working with gold- and I like the way it looks. I guess I'll have to see if 14K gold bothers me too.
I have asked a couple people that I know who have plates in their bodies too, and they said that certain metals bother them now too. I wonder if it has a relation to fibro as well?

I've re-pierced my ears about 3 times, because they get infected so easily and close up if I leave earrings out for a couple of days. Now I've had the same piercing earrings in for almost a year. At this point I'm supposed to be able to wear other earrings (good quality.) We'll see.. if I have any more pain or ooze, that's going to be it for me. At age 55, it just doesn't matter that much any more!!
