Hey everyone,

Just a quick question for ya'll.

I fell on my knee last winter on the ice. For the past year, it has continued to get worse. My MRIs and x-rays are all normal. I had them done last year, and again this past week. The doctor is now thinking that it is bursitis. He gave me a cortisone shot right in the bursa today. (OW!) It hurts even more now, to the point where putting an weight on it makes me want to cry. I'm supposed to stay off it as much as possible for the next week, and then some physical therapy afterwards. He seems to think that will take care of it, but from what I hear it is usually a chronic thing. Anyone have any experience with it? Is it related to fibro?

I havent had any trouble with my knee's but after I fell on my shoulder a couple of winters ago(dislocated it) I get bursitis in it every year now.  Ive had some pt but it didnt help just made it worse and so far resting it, getting a shot and keeping it warm and it passes in a few weeks.  Hope you get some answers soon.  It shows up in a scan really good but sure hurts like hell.  Take care Sarah.

I had an accident many years ago that damaged both my knees. I have lateral and menial meniscus tears, bursitis, arthritis and plumbers knee. And yes, sometimes the pain in my knees is far worse than the daily fibro pain. I take Mobic for the everyday inflammation and aches associated with it and about every 3 months or so I get the shot. I do have to agree that the shot can be very painful and for a day or two my knee will be almost unbearable. But, there will be relief, And, it should last several months.

Hello Sarah. I'm sorry to hear about your knee pain. Ouch. I have had several cortisone injections in various spots over the years. I just wanted to mention to you in case you dr forgot to tell you is that it could take up to two weeks for the cortisone to reach full potential. It isn't a pain killer but an anti-inflammatory medication. It reduces pain by reducing the inflammation causing the pain. Bursitis can reoccur but there are things that can help if it does. Ice to the area ASAP after the pain starts, gentle stretches and massage can all help.

So try to give it some time before you call the injection a success or failure. They can be a very useful tool. I hope you start to feel better soon. Just remember if you do feel better not to go crazy and be over-active or you'll flare it right back up.

Thank you everyone for your responses. The pain was unbearable for a couple of days, but it seems to be getting better. I'm still staying off it as much as possible though, dr's orders. Hopefully this helps, it's been a year with this stupid knee, and no one has figured out what to do with it yet.
