So sorry you are having so much difficulty with the sleep, and I can relate. For me the sleep is one of the keys to how I'll feel with the fibro.
I went to a sleep ctr, and did a sleep study, got dx with "upper airway restrictive syndrome" (similar to sleep apnea) and then got an oral appliance to wear at night (instead of the cpap machine). It helped, but only to help me make it through my work day, still completely exhausted when i got home. Now found another doctor who actually specializes in fibro!!! He has me on a ton of supplements and some prescriptions. It has actually been helping! I am sleeping! And I have more energy to do things. And the fibro symptoms are less. (stress is still a killer for me). The doctor says he goes by this other doctor's philosophy who has a book. It may be worth it to you to get the book, I did and found it helpful. "From Fatigued to Fantastic" Jacob Teitlebaum, MD. At night I take magnesium, 5 htp, melatonin, Revitalize Sleep Formula (by dr. teitelbaum), and Rx clonapin. My doctor says after I have a good 4 months of sleeping better he'll start weaning me off of some things.
I know what you mean about the "sleep hygeine" advice the docs give you, I got annoyed about that too!
I find that Emmit Miller's "Ease into Sleep" audio tape helps me with getting to sleep also and quieting my mind.
Good luck. Keep pursuing what works for you.
Best of luck!
