My right ear has been feeling like it has cotton in it for about 2 yrs now, but recently got worse about a week ago when I caught the flu.  So I went to ENT doc today who ran all kinds of tests but single one came back normal. Now, I'm totally baffled and aggravated because I can't hear well out of it and loud pitched noises make my ear hurt, yet there's nothing wrong?! Ok, so, wondering if this is another fibro thing.  Anyone else have similiar trouble?

So sorry to hear that you are having this problem with your ear! I have had a simular problem a couple of times but it went away and I think that it was just fliud in there. Sorry that I cannot be of more help to you! I hope that you get better soon or at least get some awnsers!

Thanks Kat, doc checked for fluid, did hearing testing, everything was fine. This is constant for the last 2 years, I've just never had it checked til today. I just feel like a fool when I have a legit medical complaint and yet the tests are always normal, normal, normal.

I know that you said that you have had all the tests but need to ask if any were performed by an allergist. I have the same problem with my left ear. I am allergic to dust mites and I sleep on my left side, so it affects my left ear the most. It is a mild allergy and I can deal with the "stuffed" ear feeling so I don't persue the shots, I just take an antihistamine for a few days if it feels like it is getting out of hand.

If you've been checked out and everything's normal, you might have chronic sinusitis, or something similar. Another possibility--ear wax (unless your doc examined your ear and ruled it out). Some people, like my mom, have to have it removed every few months.

Your ENT really should have checked you for sinus problems. I'd get a second opinion, if I were you. I once went to an ENT who (like yours) put me through some tests and said nothing was wrong; turned out I had an infection. One week of an antibiotic, and I could hear through my right ear again.

Never accept a doctor's verdict, if you don't get a diagnosis or relief. ;-)

I'm hearing impaired to begin with and when fronts come through or if I have a cold my hearing is much worse.  I always say my ears are blocked up.  Also, sometimes it feels like I'm in an echo chamber. 

 

The fact that you have tinnitus (noise in your ears) usually means something is going on.  I have that constantly.  It's like background noise and makes hearing speech even worse for me.  So, you definitely are not alone with this.  Here is what the Mayo Clinic has to say about tinnitus.

Thanks for the link Sherrine; sorry to vent-just aggravated because the ENT couldn't find anything. He checked for ear wax, middle ear infection, deviated septum, and did hearing testing. He said, he didn't see anything wrong and to take 40 mgs of prednisone for a week then taper down the following week. Ugh, thinking about a second opinion if this doesn't get a little better soon.
