Daughter just had a seizure

Oh boy, yesterday my daughter was walking across campus and had a seizure.  She had one really big one 7 years ago, and had been on medication ever since, until recently.  Her EEG (?) last summer didn't show any abnormal activity, so the doctor said it was reasonable to try going off.  She asked if she could have another EEG once she was off the meds, and was told, "No, we just wait and see if you have another seizure."  Dumb, wouldn't you say?

Anyhow, her backpack saved her from banging her head on the pavement, but she is pretty freaked out, because this time, she didn't lose consciousness, and felt like she was being electrocuted.  She can't legally drive for 3 months.  This is not good.

I will pray for your daughter and I know seizures are tough, my brother has them and they are tough on the body.

With the doctor, I am learning doctors are humans and to fully rely upon their knowledge at times isn't' the wisest thing to do.  At the same time the doctor is playing the insurance game, so maybe he knew he couldn't get insurance to approve another test.

Geesh ... what the heck?? I really hate the insurance game right now... I'll add her to my prayers. I bet she's scared. That sucks!!

Yikes! That must have been scary for her and for you. It just doesn't make sense that she didn't have an eeg after being taken off of meds. I hope she feels better soon.

Wow Debbie, Im sorry for you and your daughter. I will be praying for both of you. My brother has Grand Mall seizures so I know just how scarey they can be.

Geeze, I really hope everything gets back to "normal" for her and I am sure it is a major worry for you. My thoughts are with you both.

Debbie, I'm so sorry your daughter is having problems.  I know how hard it is when one of your children is hurting.  Hopefully, they will start up her meds again and she won't have any more seizures.  That has to be very frightening for her and for you.  Hope all are better soon.

Debbie, I am so sorry that you and your daughter are going through this. I cannot imagine how scary that experience must have been for her. My prayers are with you.

Thank you all so much. My daughter is a trooper! I really admire the way she goes on with her life.

We're probably going to switch to the on-call doctor I talked to the other day (her regular neurologist never even bothered calling back, even though there was plenty of time that afternoon.) He took more of an interest in that one phone call than she ever has...so hopefully we can get in to see him this week. She has started back on her meds, at a low dose for now.

My 6 year old son has seizures. He also had a big seizure when we tried to wean him from Keppra last summer after being seizure-free for over a year. Ended up in the ER.

I know what you mean about neurologists. We are on our third one. (The first two were JERKS who would NOT listen to me at all.) But we hung in there and finally found one we really like.

Hope things get better for your daughter when she readjusts to her meds.

I too am so very sorry that you and your family are having to endure this. I have a cousin who was diagnosed with epilepsy about 50 years ago and was started on medication. As far as I know she's never had any other problems. But I sure can see why a seizure like this can make life fearful. I hope her physical and emotional strength return soon and your life settles down. Try to take some time each day to relax your body and muscles so the pain level doesn't go crazy. I'm sure your daughter wouldn't want that.

I have said prayers for her and a speedy recovery to life as it was.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's seizure. I'm hoping you get in with the new neurologist and that he is a good fit for you both. Hopefully they can figure it all out and get her back to being med and seizure free. Thinking about you both!

Debbie, I am sorry to hear about your daughter's seizure. I would think that a second EEG would be routine after discontinuing the meds in this case. I can't imagine what her doctor was thinking. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that she is able to get in to see the new doctor this week, and that the appointment goes well.

I appreciate all your kind wishes.  It means a lot.

Well, I said I admire how my daughter gets on with her life, and I do, but I also wish she'd take a little more pause about this seizure.  She hasn't completely quit driving.  She says she'll stay off highways, and keep it to a minimum, but not completely quit.  She says she can feel it coming on (she's only had 2, and the first one she doesn't even remember!) and could pull over in time.  I have a friend who had them for years, and says sometimes she could feel them beforehand, sometimes not.  It's just not worth it!  

Our other daughter lives about a mile from her, and is usually available to drive her to work, etc.  Plus there's a good bus system in that town.  Her father, as usual, says, "well, as long as she doesn't do it much - - "  baloney!   nono     I mentioned not paying her car insurance, but that makes me the bad guy.  I can handle that (I'm used to it) but he pays the bills and I doubt he'd go along with it.  He prefers not to "borrow trouble."  The way I see it, he prefers to stick his head in the sand.... 

I'm used to constant power struggles with our son, but not with our daughters!    

She hasn't seen a doctor yet.  She has an appt. with the on-call doctor I liked on the phone for 2 weeks from today.  Her present neuro couldn't get her in for 2 months!
