I am in the midst of a horrible flare since friday. I'm in so much pain that I'm now sick to my stomach. I have an appointment to see my internist at 11:30am. I have a friend who has fibro and says her doctor gives her steroids for really bad flare-ups. Have any of you taken this for fibro? I got addicted to narcs - so I can't take any of those.

I had my doc prescribe steroids for flares. He said if it worked, I should notice a huge difference. I didn't.

The doctor wouldn't give me anything. He told me to go home - I have fibro. I guess that means I'm nothing.

I had been on high dose prednisone since January and just completed a taper for other health issues that are inflammatory.

The prednisone did not help my fibro at all. Prednisone is used to help with inflammation...fibro is not inflammatory, although it feels like it.

How is your vitamin D level? If it is below normal it can cause alot of achiness. Hope you find relief soon!

myjoy, I hope you are feeling better today. Maybe it is time to find a new doctor because you deserve to have the best treatment possible. The doctor tried me on prednisone once. It was actually for a non fibro related issue but I noticed my pain lessoned during the time I was on it. The down side was I had so many other side effects to the steroid I don't know which is worse the pain or the side effects. I have started meditation and deep breathing and that has really helped me stay on a low pain threshold side but tough to try to meditate when you are in a major pain flare. Anyway, I hope you are feeling better today and gentle hugs to you.....Bay

Thanks guys - I don't feel any better today. I'm going to try a therapeutic massage on friday. I've never had one. Anyone know if this will help? And yes, I'm looking for a new doctor.

Hi myjoy, I really understand your frustration it plain sucks to have all this pain and then have your dr treat you like you are a nothing, grrrrr. I don't know if steroids help or not I was prescribed prednisone once and it messed with my glucose levels so had to stop. Hopefully massage will work for you.

Steroids don't usually help people with fibro.  I've taken them for Crohn's disease and my auto immune inner ear disease and they can be bad news.  Really.  I, personally, try to avoid them.

 

Your doctor might know of something that is non-addictive that you can take.  I hope this flare leaves you in a hurry.

I have Fibro, EOA and severe OA. If steroids help your pain, I would think you have some kind of arthritis along w/your Fibro. That is not uncommon. I had a high dose of steriods last summer when I had a severe asthma attack. I felt wonderful while I was on those steroids. BUT, you can't stay on them...they can cause adrenal insufficiency and osteoporosis. They are good for short term usage, though, when you really need them.

When they were first trying to dx me they put me on 40 mg of steriods for over 8 months. I finally got down to 5mg a day but I've never been able to come completely off. EVERYTHING hurts even more than it already does when I do, if that seems possible. she said I am one of those rare cases that won't be able to come off of it..

I was given it at first because they thought polymyalgia rheumatica/which turned out not to be true or so she thinks..she tells me Im one of those that the blood work doesn't scream this or that but my symptoms so otherwise... wht the heck does that mean?? anyway, bottom line if it's not inflammatory I wouldn't take them!

lThey make everything feel better, but the side effects are not worth it!

something non narcotic is Tramadol, you might want to suggest that to your NEW doc...get rid of this person..

Hope you get to feeling better soon...I know it may hard to believe right now, but it does get better..

I have been on prednisone tapering from 15mg to 7 mg for the last 9 months for polymyalgia rheumatica. The steroids have never helped my fibro pain. If they do help with other pains there is probably something else going on besides fibro. I am like FibroNana where my blood work always comes back normal but with the PMR I got almost instant relief of symptoms which confers the diagnosis.

I was thinking also that tramadol may be something you could take. I take 100mg 3xday for pain control along with tylenol as needed. It does take the edge off. I was formerly on Oxycontin with oxycodone for bt pain but they never really seemed to help. After a 3 month taper I stopped using narcotics and switched to tramadol. For me the tramadol works just as well as the narcotics. Of course, everyone is different so what works for one person isn't always right for another. I also use baclofen, a muscle relaxer, for when I have a flare.

When I was diagnosed with the fibro, I was put on several months of oral steroids. It helped me tremendously - I couldn't even put on a jacket or get dressed without help and even the soles of my feet hurt when I got up in the morning. Don't know how I would have gotten through that first horrible flare-up without the steroids, but I hope to never need them again - lots of side effects. My symptoms seem to come and go - sometimes lasting for weeks and then better for several weeks. The biggest problems is that when the flareup is bad, I am so tired. Is that normal

I take prednisone and it does help me but I also have RA. I was on 20mg a day and now down to 5mg a day. I didn't have any side affects besides 'moon face' and some weight gain. Once my dosage was lowered to 10mg, the moon face and weight gain went away.

I seem to be locking a lot of threads lately! When they're this old, a lot of the original posters are "no longer with us," so it makes sense to start a new one if you want to discuss the same subject. :-)
