I've been taking Lyrica for over 5 years and at first it really made a difference. I 've been in a bad flare for almost 2 weeks. Which is long for me. I could be due increase in symtoms because of seasonal depression but it started me thinking. I have heard others say that Lyrica stopped working for them. I was wondering if that is true. Has anyone else had an experience with that? Is there any other drugs I could take instead? Sure glad to find you guys.

Hi bermans!
And welcome to the Fibro Family~~ What you've heard about Lyrica is correct. That comes from the manufacturers' own data even though they didn't really want to share that part. Most people get about 2 to 2 1/2 years before is stops working...some more, some less. So you appear to be a lucky one since you've gone near 5 years.
I'm guessing that the doctor who prescribed you the Lyrica (Pregabalin) might have you try Neurontin (gabapentin). That's just a guess on my part. I do hope you find something that works as well as the Lyrica did. I tried and can't take it but have my own regime that my doc and I use to help ease the pain.
Keep in touch,

Acheybody, Lyrica works on the pain aspect of Fibro only. I've seen it given on the orthopedic floor I was on for my knee replacement. It helps relieve neuromuscular pain for people with accidental bone fractures where there is alot of muscular damage. Unfortunaltly I saw my pain doc last week and forgot to ask. I can't believe I forgot talk about fog. Thanks for all your input guys.

Yes, the pain aspect is what I meant. For me, that's far and away the worst problem with fibro. I can deal with the fog - I've been a spacehead my whole life! :)

I'm 21 now, but when I was on Lyrica I was 18. When I took it it worked for about a month, however I found it difficult to function because I felt drugged. After that month, it actually made my pain WAY worse! I would wake up feeling like somebody had drilled huge holes into my hipbones with a powerdrill and then set them on fire. It was awful. Then, it went away the moment I stopped taking it.

Lyrica didn't work for me, for some it works wonders but mine took a very small edge off the pain. Im talking if it was a bed ridden 9-10 it would take it down to an 8.5-8.75. If I wasn't in much pain I noticed more effects such as lowering it from a 7 to 6.5 but when waging the cost of the medication to how helpful it was, I didn't see much of a long term use.
The fact that you received pain relief for that long is amazing and as stated before you may want to try Gabapentin if pregabalin worked so well for you. Don't be worried when you reach high doses of gapabentin as pregabalin is much more potent than gabapentin.
Personally I can see where some will receive pain relief but my largest relief from the medication was anxiety. I have alot of anxiety however thats I know that this sources from the pain and I'd rather get to the source than poke and prod at other symptoms.
Pregabalin and Gabapentin are the other types of medication I know in this class. Have you tried Cymbalta? That seems like another hit or miss fibro treatment (however of course for me was living hell) but I can definitely see its benefits. You may even want to consider Ultram for a few months and you can always try Lyrica again later!

some other anti-convulsant meds out of the pregabalin and gabapentin class that may help with pain of many sources and potentate opioids: oxcarbazepine"Trileptal", like Tegretol or Carbatrol but without needing frequent CBC blood test. lamotrigine"Lamictal" has pain-relief properties, one of the CNS receptors it works on is the Sigma opioid receptor that might be the reason but it also has action on glutamate receptors and NMDA similar to methadone or levorphanol or dextromethoraphan. tiagabine"Gabitril" is a GABAergic like benzo's but it is a GABA re-uptake inhibitor. GABA is a inhibitory neurotransmitter that is also a amino acid you can take in supplement form, it's 50/50 on if that will change the amount that becomes active. Glycine is another inhibitory-neurotransmitter/amino acid and some new medications are near release to market that are Glycine Re-uptake inhibitors ect. a new drug about to be released called Stedesa by Sepracor Pharmaceuticals (same as Lunesta) generic: escilcarbazepine acetate. related to carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine it blocks voltage-gated sodium channels. that makes brain neurons less excitable. i took gabapentin and trileptal together 3200mg/900mg per day divided and it helped much like Lyrica but with Lyrica you get results at lower doses so less adverse effects than dosing gabapentin up high. Keppra, Zonegran, and Topamax all could help, maybe? benzodiazepines like Klonopin or Ativan can help fibro-spectrum pain very well. I believe you can form a tolerance to Lyrica and a withdrawal condition if you stop abruptly. only some people get the withdrawal symptoms like anxiety. i was on 150mg 2 times per day and because of weight gain dropped it down to 75mg q12hours. it is probably a good med as new meds go.

Wow thanks guys for all the input on Lyrica. Yes I'm on Cymbalta and are just working out the best dose for me. My depression was bad over winter and I was on 90-120mgm. Doc warned it takes awhile to assess dose. I am now on 60mgm as I wasn't sleeping and was too wired on higher dose. My big problem now I think is that I am on a Fentanyl patch with was started for my Fibro and Knee pain. Since I had my knees replaced about a year ago the knee pain is much less. Although I get Myofascial pain if I overdo it. Now I have weaned off half of Fentanyl dose slowly. It was rough with same symptoms I'm having now so I think alot of my pain and cold sweats is due to affect of patch wearing off early if I emerse it in hot tub, which I do after I swim 3 times a week. Then I run out early after hours of higher dose due to hot water. This is my latest theory. I've started to journal my symptoms to see if my theory is correct then I will have to start weaning off some of it. Although I'm afraind pain will come back. I am off all oral morphine as it dosn't work anyway, just constipates me. Anyone have similar experiences. What do you think of my theory. I journaling proves my theory then I will tell my doc. Sometimes I think I do all the thinking for my docs. I'm a nurse so it helps. LOL
