I'm new to this forum and I want to first say 'hello'!  I have a question that maybe someone can help me on.  I was diagnosed with fibro about 8 years ago.  Over those eight years I have gotten progessively worse to the point that I can no longer function.  In those eight years I have had the same Rheumy who finally two years ago prescribed me two 5mg vicodin a day.  Last year I asked her to up it to three a day and she flat out refused.  I was shocked that after all these years of knowing how my level of pain was progressing she could be so heartless.  Now after spending time reading on these forums I realize just how generous she was and my chances of getting vicodin now are very slim.   She has relocated out of my area so now I've been looking for a new doctor.  I've decided to try a neurologist this time.  I was wondering if anyone uses a neurologist to treat their fibro.  I know I had to call ten different neurologists before I found one that said they treat fibro.

Hi, Dawn, and welcome!  I'm so glad you joined our family!  There are a few that see a neurologist but most see a rheumatologist or an Internist for fibromyalgia.  I'm sooo glad you asked if they treated patients with fibro, though.  If you don't, you just might end up with a doctor that doesn't believe it exists!  I see a board certified Internist for my fibro and most everything else I have.  I've never been to a rheumy but many members love their rheumies.  I think the rapport you have with your doctor, no matter the "title", is the most important thing..that in the fact that the doctor treats fibro patients.

 

Be sure to check out Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibro and you might learn even more than you know.  I have had fibro for 24 years and am still learning new things.

Thanks Sherrine ! I will definately check out that link! Believe it or not but for all these years I really thought fibro was only about pain. I just recentely stumbled on a fibro forum and I was just blown away. The rheumy I was seeing for 8 years for this NEVER told me anything more then it was about pain. I guess now I'm hoping a neuro will have more answers/confirmations for me. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

Hi Dawn . and welcome

 

there are some Doctors who just dont belive in using Pian Meds to help with Fibro I personally think they are in another world. we have rights as Cronic pain persons. and our quility of life does matter . thank Goodness My Doctors have no problem with writing pain meds for me. I do belive I would be bed ridden without them. they never complety take all the pain away . but they do take the edge off.

I have fired many Doctors in my life. I normally call first and ask about the Doc. and do a litle research on line about them. finding a good one is hard and some times you need to meet and greet I call it, a couple two or three before you find one you wil be able to work with .

I know after I got my DX I did a lot of research about Fibro and CFS (cronic fatiuge Syndrom). and anything else that might over lap the Fibro. being as my symptoms have progressed over the years and there just seems to be so many . more than my Rhume told me about when DX'ed .

and as you know not every body has good results with Lyrica and Savella two of the most common meds used . I personally have tried being on the max dose of Lyrica two times now . and after a few months have to back  of as to many side afects the Doc's dont like. Edema, Bluring of the vison . and ( this is a good one ) more pain in my hands and feet. if that is even poss.

I guess I got lucky with my Doc's. because they do belive in providing pain meds...

I take Perc 10\325  , Fentanol patch . and Soma along with now a low dose of Lyrica. I tried Savella two times and could not get past the side affets. It made me so sick I could not even sit up.

 

any way ... I wish yiou luck with this new Doc.. and dont be afriad to look for a Differnt one if this one does not work out.

 

my internal medican doc has manged my tretment plan for the last year or so. and I just check in with Rhume and see if they think we should change anything.

I was on Lyrica for a year, which worked wonderful for pain, but had very serious side effects. I ended up in the ER because my hands had swollen so badly that the skin was threatening to burst. Had no idea at the time that is had anything to do with the Lyrica so I kept on taking it. A couple weeks later I found myself with a loaded gun to my head. It was like I didn't want to be doing this but I had no control over it what so ever. To this day I'm still not sure why I'm still alive but something stopped me from going through with it. I heard on a commercial three days later from the lyrica commercial that it could cause suicidal tendancies. I stopped taking it cold turkey (I know not smart but I was beyond freaked out). I will NEVER take it again.

I'm really hoping this doctor works out for me as I have no medical coverage and the office visit alone is $360 not to mention blood work. I'm unemployed as is my husband (who a month ago broke his back and we had no coverage, he was in the hospital for 2 days). Sooo ... needless to say I'm really hoping I find a good one soon because I can't afford to keep doing this!
