Muscles in my upper back making crunching and snaping noises. Anyone familiar with this?

The muscles in my upper back make all sorts of crunching and popping noises when i roll my shoulders. It doesn't appear to me my bones either which is what is confusing me. I always have pain there along with cervical spinal pain directly under my skull. The muscle pain and noise is pretty relentless. I have crazy knots and tension there. Massages although feel good ( like a good pain) can sometimes ( although not always) put me into a horrible intense aching/fatigue flare only hours later. The cervical spine pain sorta comes and goes in intensity. When I get the the cervical spine pain, it's like an intense ache, almost like a headache, which is usually accompanied by more intense fatigue, mental fogginess and well a horrible mood to be honest. My question is does anyone know what the muscle cracking is? and what the cervical spine pain is from?

I continue to be a mystery diagnosis... a bit of history...36yrs old, stage 3 endometriosis 4 years ago, 3 huge fibroids removed, diagnosed with Fibro but since i reacted really well to a 6 day does pack of steroids, rhemy feels there's something autoimmune going on. Tests neg for ANA, and C-Reactive Protein, Positive for EBV a year ago...things got worse afterward. Tested positive for Parvo in November...Thyroid tests all come back fine, adrenals fine, bloodtest negative for Celiacs. Currently taking Savella, Adderall for fatigue and brain fog, meloxicam for flares only.

I am at a total loss and ready to shelf this for a while and just focus on controlling the pain. Makes me so sad.

I hear more crackling noises when I lift my arms up over my head but luckily not that thud sternum pain you mentioned. I do however have aching pain in my sternum sometimes but always attributed that to my super low vitamin D since I read that type of pain is associated with it. Something to do with inflammation of the cartilage?

I get that popping too.  I was told it's the fluid between the joints popping.

I wondered about that too but assumed it was probably arthritis?My legs and arms make those snap crackle pop noises too.

ya me to the sholder blades and neck specilly at the base of my neck and head. causes migrans some times to.. have tried trigger point injections for this area . but no luck.

seems to have traveled down my back now days. and my lower back and hips have joined in

do your feet hurt to walk. ? mine do real bad. can never seem to get in a comforabule postin for long . always adjusting.

what about getting hot and breaking out into  sweat ?

Oh yea my feet hurt at times and I look like I am 90 years old. Lower back and hips too although I have a bulging disc and DJD in my lower back. I just try to think how nice it is on the days when something doesn't actually hurt.

And yes I sweat like crazy.

I know the feeling about the popping. I was at physical therapy today and I started one of the exercises. It is a small office and I brace my hands against a door frame in the waiting area and press against the frame. My shoulders popped really loud. I asked the therapist if she heard it she sd no, but a lady in the waiting room with us sd she did and it sounded loud.

 

Redheadbk-I think you're thinking of costochondritis. I get that too (usually during a flare) and it stinks big-time. Makes a bra feel like a steel cage. The first dx that my doc gave me was "wide-spread tendonitis" but I kind of scoffed it off, wondering how on earth that could ever be possible. I'm starting to think he's not far off because a lot of my pain is in areas where there are tendons and it feels "deeper" than muscular pain.

I get the same crunching/popping sounds in by neck and back.  I try to stretch everyday but the sounds seem to get worse.  I also have what feels like severe muscle tension.  Sometimes when it's really bad after I walk somewhere and stop it feels like I am still moving.  It's like a swaying motion.  Very weird sensations.  I also get the ache in the neck that most of the time turns into a bad headache which makes it very hard to focus or think.  I have tried physical therapy to no avail.  I contine to stretch everyday along with light exercise but so far no improvement.

I have all of these symptoms too. I've been reading about Lymes disease - and all of these symptoms match up with the disease. Most people don't recall getting a tick bite. A friend of mine who had all of these issues tested positive for Lymes too. It's difficult to treat if not caught early. Mainstream testing and medicine is difficult - false negatives are common %50 of the time, and short term antibiotics often do not work. Need to request Igenx testing, and find lyme literate doctor. I don't have insurance right now, or a job or I would.

i just did a search for 'can muscles make a cracking sound?' and ended up here!  in 2003 i ruptured 2 vertebrae -c-5 and c-6 (base of skull and below) - same area others on this site are indicating the same cracking/popping sounds.  i mended well with no surgery and all was fine until 2 years ago when i rolled my foot under the barn door and hit the ground twisting everything from head to foot.  i was in excruciating pain in one or the other, and sometimes both hips; down my leg left leg and into my ankle.  my foot would physically swell.  i thought i had several diff issues going on my ankle was x-rayed at one point and my hip another time with completely healthy bones. after putting up with this for several months, i decided to see a massage therapist for a deep tissue massage.  omg.  ecstasy.  she could fix my hips, back, leg, AND ankle by working on my neck.  i too have extreme tension from anxiety in my neck and shoulders and this can all be fixed in my neck and spine.  initially, she did have to work on my hip socket and knee since i'd been trying to walk for so long and screwing with those muscles but she worked them all out.  this took several trips (maybe 10?) at half to one hour weekly sessions but it was well worth it.  she worked in an office with a chiropractor and he thought he could "pop" me well.  i knew it was not bone related but let him try and he accomplished nothing - not even a pop.  the LMT proved it (licensed massage therapist) was in the muscles and tendons.  i have also seen another LMT unrelated to the first gal, and she too, knew exactly what and how to fix me.  it is amazing!  now, when i sit tensed up and hunkered over my keyboard and ball up, my arms feel like i've been lifting beer barrels over my head and are actually sore to the touch.  but the LMT can fix all this by working in my neck and down my spine.  so i would highly recommend that if all else has failed, see your local massage therapist.  it should be $40-$50 for half an hour and $60-$70 for an hour and many insurances cover this.  i am very very please.  i am not "cured" and may eventually end up having my vertebrae scanned again but for now it is working quite well.  i am 53 years old, overweight but very active and have to be self sufficient and can't afford to lose my strength and mobility.  good luck and give it a try!!

I had all these issues and more- get tested for Lyme disease - it's an epidemic!
