TRAVEL WITH FIBRO - ANY TIPS?

Hey guys, I'm going to LA and NYC - from Sydney that is.  In November my daughter will visit for a month, then back home to Syd's Bush.

I would appreciate any tips you may have for travel.  It will be 15 hours from Syd to LAX and 22 hours from NYC back to Syd.

When I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer on top of the fibro, I started a bucket list and USA here I come!

I think of you all often, and it's great to know you are there.  I have only met one person in my home town with fibro and we are always saying we will meet and walk our dogs, but we're usually in bed when we phone, text or email each other saying "Sorry, can't make it today, the fibro is bad, I'm in bed".  Sound familiar.

I would love to meet some of you, with the Moderator's permission of course.

Be sure to pack on extra week of medications as a safety measure.  Also, put your medications in your carry-on. 

 

Wear the most comfortable things you can...including shoes.  Drink lots of water before and during the flights.  This can help you from getting sick.

 

Some people carry neck pillows.  I have never needed that but that's another idea. 

 

Be sure to get up and stand and walk a little if possible during the flight.  If that means you have to get in line for the bathroom, that's great.  On your long flights, the planes are larger so I know I've been able to walk up and down the aisles and I did quite frequently.  This helps with your circulation.  Be sure to copy and take the stretching exercises from Fibro 101 with you, too.  These were designed for flights.

 

Pack a few snacks of some kind on your carry-on.  If you are stuck on the turmac, you will be mighty glad you have a snack and, of course, a large bottle or two of water.  (In the US we have to buy the water at the airport after we have gone through the check-through.) 

 

Most importantly, have a wonderful trip!

Oh I know what you need. My doc prescribed these pain patches - if your doctor hasn't, or won't, get some at the store - and wear them on the flight. Put them in your most sensitive spots (mine is my shoulders). I flew from the US to Egypt, and though everyone on the plane could smell them (the ones from the doc aren't very strong smelling) I wasn't in massive pain from the stiff seats.

Have something you enjoy doing with you. I am a reader, and always have a good book to start. If I don't have something to distract me, I feel the pain more. I also bring earplugs.
