When I went to the doctor and got my allergy testing,he actually sat down with me and we had a talk for about a half an hour.I love him,he not only saved my life last year but he takes time to explain things if I ask.I told him that my other doctor said I have fibro and he said that alot of what is wrong with me,the weakness,the numbness etc.. is side effects from floraquiolone antibiotics so I looked up a few articles on the ones I have had and for one thing they are not supposed to be given at the same time as corticosteroids because it causes more damage.It doesn't affect everyone like that but there are alot of people especially after repeated use that it does and most of the time it gets blamed on other stuff. Everyone knows they can cause tendon damage,but they can cause hearing loss too and other central nervous system problems amongst other things.Don't get me wrong they sometimes can't be avoided(they did save my life) but if you just have a minor problem like a bladder infection,ear infection,something that can be taken care of by something less strong I would do it to avoid possible future problems.

Yeah I took one of those antibiotics in December and was shocked at the side affects. I was very careful because of the possible tendon damage. I felt my ankles get really stiff when I was on it. But I had 2 issues - a bladder infection and a forever cough that refused to leave, so my doc put me on that, because it's one of the few that works for both things. It worked, but I hope to never take them again. My stomach didn't like them either.

My niece was given Levaquin, a quinolone antibiotic, and ended up bedridden for over a month.  She was in her 20's when this happened and was given this for a cold.  She had extreme muscle pain and weakness.  It was horrible.

 

We do have to check out what we are taking.  It's scary what some of these meds can do.  Thanks Nana for letting us know about your experience.  Knowledge is power.

That is so interesting.  I was put on cipro and prednisone at the same time and thats when alot of my problems started.  Not only once but twice and the combo of drugs had me bedridden also. It took me months to recover also.  My rhuemy doc said that prednisone makes fibro worse....but I wonder now if it was the combo of the two drugs.  My wrists and hands and feet and ankles hurt the worse of the fibro, something new to look into.  Thanks for the info. and the drug awareness.  Usually because I take three presciption meds now I always have the pharmacy and doc look into it.  I probably will ask for further tests next time I see the doc as I only had xrays and pressure points to be diagnosed.  Blood test did rule out RA but I do have arthritis in two fingers.

I've had swollen knees with good xrays,also negative for ra and other stuff at one time the rheumy thought I might have had sarcoidosis but didn't have that either.I was focused on having a mystery diagnosis or something else rare and didn't think of it being something so simple.I am allergic to alot of antibiotics so theres not much I can use besides floraquinlones and erythromycin but I have decided to go with erythromycin in the future unless it doesn't do the job or unless I am really sick and in the hospital again which I hope never happens.I am having an opptimistic attiutde,someday I will become atleast near normal and I do thank those meds for getting rid of the double pnemonia and possible sepsis(thats what they say).I just don't want to sound ungrateful but I wish I didn't have all these terrible side effects but there are alot of people with worse conditions than me so in saying that I will try to be more grateful,I really just wanted to let everyone know that if you have another option you really should take it and only use these drugs as last resort.
