I had to break my vow of no medication(because of side effects) and start taking a blood pressure medication today it is called amlodipine.Has anyone here taken this before.I am concerned that it will cause neuropathy which some kinds of blood pressure medications can or make the fibromyalgia worse.There is no avoiding taking them cause my blood pressure got up to 170/100 at the doctors office today.I also am frustrated because I could not get my antibiotic because the pharmacy said that my insurance said that the doctor has to call them and tell them what its for before they can authorize it and the doctor's office was closed by the time I went to get it so this spot has to stay infected for another night and I'm worried about it.

I've been on quite a few different BP meds and none have bothered my fibro. I've switched around a lot because of side effects. Since there are so many different BP meds, you can probably find one that works and doesn't have intolerable side effects. My doc has me start at a low dose and work up, if necessary, to the dose my body needs.

Sometimes the side effects go away but sometimes they don't. One med literally made me crazy, about 45 min after taking it, I was convinced that someone was going to kill me. I would get really terrified that someone was going to stab me. It was very scary. It happened every time I took it and has never happened when I didn't take it. Very weird.

I took amlodipine for a while and don't remember reading about neuropathy as a side effect. If you start having any problems, call your doc right away. Never just stop a BP med unless your doc tells you to especially if you've been taking it for a while.

The best way to minimize the side effects is to do whatever you can to lower your BP- exercise, weight loss, dietary changes or whatever your doc suggests. This way you can keep the meds to a minimum.

I have been on lisionpril and now Benicar. The lisinopril gave me a horrible cough so that is considered a reaction serious enough to warrant me not taking it. Havent had any probs with benicar.... but I am also on a low dose which is enough to keep my blood pressure in check.

It seems with fibro we do tend to run the gammat of side effects with most meds, but there are so many b/p meds out there u should be able to find one that is good for you like dagger said.

Stress also causes your b/p to rise as well as pain does it too... I know when I am in a really bad flare it is up no matter what i do.... oh and anxiety.. that will send it through the roof!!

Oh wow, isn't that just like an insurance company - needing the doctor's reason for prescribing an antibiotic.  You'd think they would assume it's for an infection, wouldn't you???

Don't get me started!  Woops, too late!!  What do they think, that the doctor is secretly trying to get you high off of it?

Grrrr.... skull   Hope you get it soon and that it really helps.

Getting your blood pressure down is very important, so I'm glad that you are taking something for it. I've been on BP meds for a long time, luckily with no crazy side effects. Over the years my meds and dosages have been changed due to a difficult time trying to get it controlled. It is now under control using two meds,
Diltiazem and Bystolic.

Wishing you the best and do what you can to help...exercise, diet and stress reduction. Hoping that you can get your antibiotic too!

yeah no weird side effects from the blood pressure meds yet except a little more tired.I did however have slight anxiety issues from the antibiotic(erythromycin)but thats only because I drank some coffee(your not supposed to)but its hard,I only drink two cups a day and I feel like thats the only no=no I got left.I don't smoke anymore,I can't drink even one beer on b.p meds. Not that I have drank alot during the last year cause I don't really get into that anymore. I am really nervous about tomorrow,I've had the broncoscope done over a dozen times but they have to put me to sleep.They told me to make sure to take a shower or bath(I'm guessing so I don't get infected?) but I have this infected mole what if the broncoscope causes a chain reaction since the area is so close to where my infected mole is and I get sepsis again.thanks to the insurance I didn't get much meds in me yet and I can't take 1 dose of it tomorrow either because my broncoscopy isn't until noon. I know I am thinking of alot of what if's but during these times I can't stop myself,I am in therapy but I haven't been able to completely shake the post traumatic stress disorder,atleast my husband will be there. It's kind of crazy my thoughts but last year one of my friends died just before I got really sick and a day ago my ex husbands aunt just died...makes me think its a pattern.I guess I can only pray on it.

Angela - Benicar is the one that made me crazy! Just shows how we are all different.

I had to stop lisinopril years ago because of the cough. I had an abdominal hernia and my doc had me do everything possible to stop coughing. I started taking it again last year and I haven't had a problem with it. After trying a few $50 copay meds, I insisted my doc let me try lisinopril again because it's so cheap.

right now I am having strange feelings in my chest don't know if it is possibly anxiety or the meds. My problem is that I read the side effects to the medications then I don't know if its real or if possibly I am making symptoms happen.I read where erythromycin can cause arrythmia or qt prolongation and amlodipine can cause edema and tachycardia. Normally it does not make me nervous when the package says rare incidences but knowing me I am the one to get the rare instance.c-diff used to be a rare incidence yet I got it last fall from the antibiotics I was on in the summer.

My broncoscope went well (airways still open 90%)nothing has changed since october.I really feel yucky though.My face is flushing,I feel sick to my stomach and my blood pressure is borderline (does anyone know how long it takes amlodipine to start working)I have only taken it for 2 days now.My bp is 147/86.Other strange things are occuring too.in addition to the infected mole I got a pimple where my pic lines were last year.

I am glad that the broncoscope went well for you. Try to relax and not worry so much. The stress is going to cause you to flare with your fibro. I take diazide and atenolol for blood pressure. I like the diazide because it is also a water pill and not only has my blood pressure come down, but I have lost weight too. These are both older meds and don't give you any problems with breathing and infection in your chest, but I took another kind once and it made me cough. I can't remember the name of it now. But I would know it if I saw it.

I have been on amlodipine for over a year and a half. Less reaction to this med then others. BP 132/70

I also am on amlodipine for BP issues, and have had little to no side effects. Hope you experience the same thing.
