The thought crossed my mind as I went to my first acupunture appointment today. My rheumy referred me to acupuncture and massage for the fibro and osteoarthritis.
Not sure what to make of it so far. As each needle went in (only like 8 total) it felt like a current running through me, kinda weird. I was quite relaxed. Other than that, I'm not sure what I should (or should not) feel. Maybe I'll notice something tomorrow. Or maybe it will take a few visits.
I really liked the practitioner. He recommended a product called Repair Gold, some digestive enzyme supplement that I'll read up about.
Anyone have acupuncture or tried Repair Gold and want to share what might be expected?

Hi haven't had acupuncture but my dr also recommended it let us know how you go with it I might give it a go myself....shannon

I like the title,I thought you were gonna say having fibro makes you feel like a voo doo doll.That is the way I feel today.It feels like somebody threw my voo doo doll down and stomped on it. I have no experience with acupuncture but I did just have an emg(they sick needles in you for this)and it didn't feel too good and the places where he stuck the needles were sore.

I have tried accupuncture.  It didn't help my fibro but it did help my hearing!  LOL  So, there is something to this practice.  I had treatments three times a week for six months and then I stopped because of the expense...$600 a month!  I didn't feel "currents" going through me, though.  It was just a tiny prick that I felt.  The needles were so fine I almost felt nothing.  But, I did give it my best and it didn't help me.  I hope it helps you.

Thanks for the feedback. Today I did notice a couple of things that could be attributed to the acupuncture, or maybe I was just having a good day, which does happen, thankfully.
I felt "looser" today, like not so stiff, more relaxed.
And while I was totally tired all morning like I have been lately, around lunch time it seemed to all lift and I felt quite energetic. Even a little hyper. And here it is 9:30 pm and I still feel energetic and ready to go.
Sherrine, and I was feeling annoyed by my $30 copayments!
My next appointment is Monday. It will be interesting to see how I feel over the next few days.

It could take time for this to manifest itself in you.  If you think you had a little relief, then I'd keep going.  I went that long in hopes it would kick in.  I still had all the fibro pain but noticed I could hear better.  I went to my audiologist and I had gained 30 decibels in each ear!  That was amazing.  Unfortunately I lost the hearing again because I couldn't keep up the treatments. 

 

But, even though it didn't help my fibro, it could help yours!  I really hope this helps you.

For me, it didn't really make a difference in my fibro. The 1st accupuncturist I went to said, after 1 treatment, that he couldn't help me -which I thought was strange. But I went to the 2nd for about 4-5 months, twice a week. I also drastically changed my diet and took Chinese herbs. I'd feel better at the time, and maybe for a few hours, lighter, calmer, slightly energized, something vague like that.

But - that said - I know it was doing something because I'd feel odd things...like the time there was only 1 needle, in my foot, and I suddenly got a strong taste of onion in my mouth! It wasn't covered by my insurance, either, so unfortunately I couldn't really justify continuing when the results were so subtle.

I hope it does wonders for you, though.

Do you remember what brand and type Chinese herbs you used
My acupuncturist gave me some but I want to be careful as I have heard in news some were tainted with heavy metal

I have " plum flower brand" called peony and licorice: shao Yao fan cap wan

No, Tulips, sorry. I don't remember at all, but "plum flower" doesn't ring a bell. I remember these little round things that looked kind of like mercury (some nutritional supplement.) Then there were all these herbs that I boiled and made tea out of. I actually kind of got to like the smell, but my family remembers it being awful!

Do you have nerve pain. Stabbing shooting to tingling pins and needles and etc etc. I see you take Elavil so wondering If that's for and dose it help.

I do have some nerve pain going on, yes. My worst pain is muscle pain, and when that gets bad, the nerve stuff likes to jump onboard too. It has gotten more pronounced over the years - great, something to look forward to! I've gotten better at ignoring it all since my doctor said my actual spine damage is pretty normal for someone my age (56), I just feel it where most wouldn't.

Actually, I take Nortriptyline, which is very similar to Elavil but, my doctor says, less sedating. I've been on it for almost 20 years now. It just generally helps with the pain level and also sleep (and probably a little secondary depression, as well.)

Back for an update on the acupuncture. I've had 3 treatments now and I'm feeling pretty disappointed. The visit where he worked on my lower back really just aggravated it and it's been flared up pretty good since then. Overall I haven't noticed anything different/better. I'm not sure how long I should try to see real results. I've been referred for massage, too, so maybe I should just try that. I can't afford the copayments to do both.

Gentle massages help me.  Here is a site where you could find a really good massage therapist near you.  They have to cintinue taking classes on how to massage people with various illnesses.  My therapist says there is no reason for a deep massage except it costs more.  She will give them if someone really wants one but I know a deep massage would kill me. 

 

Before you make an appointment with anyone, make sure they have experience in massaging people with fibro.  It does make a difference. I've had just the neighborhood massage parlor do me with no good results.  My MT is in this group by the way.  She just finished a course on how to massage people with cancer.  There really is a difference!
