Hi, Jacs, and welcome! I'm so glad you found us and joined in. Yes, we do have wonderful members that love to help one another and, as a bonus, really do care about each other, too. I think you will like it here.
I've had a good life in spite of fibromyalgia. Once you find what works for you to control the pain, you are well on your way! I've amazed myself at things I've accomplished. I try everything but I pace myself. I now know what I can and cannot do and that's a big help.
Your brain is just fine. You have cognitive memory problems but can learn to work around them. I mentioned in another thread about a wonderful book that has helped me a lot....The Memory Book by Harry Lorayne and Jerry Lucas. I know they sell it online but you might find it in your library, too. It's been around for decades. Also, we have had members go on to get their master's degree in education...that's after four years of college. So, yes, it can be done. Remember, if you think you can't do something then you really can't! Keep positive thoughts and you will be amazed what you can do.
We all are going through financial problems...all over the world! I've had to do a little financial rearranging myself. I'm a widow. But I'm still managing. There are jobs you might find that can help out...things like being a receptionist. It's not a really physical job and you certainly could handle that. Just make a list of jobs you think you could handle and go after them.
Jacs, I have lost 85 pounds. I lost them about six years ago and have kept it off. Want to know how? Start counting carbohydrates. I could eat anything I wanted but in smaller portions. I limited myself to no more than 40 carbs in a meal (many times I only had 20-30 carbs) and I didn't snack on carbs either. One thing I do is I use a sandwich plate instead of a dinner plate. The plate is full but not not as much food like it would be on a dinner plate. Your brain thinks you are getting plenty (and you really are!) and you are satisfied after you eat. Also I drink a lot of water and that is so good for you. If you google "counting carbohydrates" you can find a lot of info on this. It's safe, healthy, and can easly become a way of life. It has for me.
Also, keep moving. If you sit or lay too much you will be stiff as a board and in more pain. You will have to start out slowly. There are some gentle stretching exercises in Fibro 101 that can help and also walking is a wonderful gentle exercise for fibro. I started out slowly but now I walk my dog at least a mile before breakfast. All of this kicks in the metabolism. Oh, always have something for breakfast. I used to skip breakfast but since I started having something to eat in the morning, the weight has come off much easier. This kicks in the metabolism, too.
Be sure to check out Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum. There are links to good information about fibromyalgia and you will learn a lot there. Good starting links would be Symptoms and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia. All the links do have good things in them and knowledg is power!
I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. Don't hesitate to ask questions because we are here to help you. I hope to hear more from you soon.
