Bad weekend: I had a seizure!

I have not posted in quite a while because we recently moved to another state. This weekend I had a seizure. It really scared my family and me. The paramedics think it was due to low blood sugar, but my doctor thinks it was because of the medicine I was on (tramadol and cymbalta). I was already weaning off the cymbalta, and the tramadol doesn't work anymore anyway, so I am weaning off that too. I will have further testing this week to get to the bottom of it. It is just so scary! I am afraid it will happen again, and it will just be me and my kids.

Has anyone had this happen? How can I prevent this?

Hi there...I bet that was scary! I have heard of these two medications causing seizures if they are weaned too quickly. Our dog was on Tramadol (yes, they give this stuff to our pets) and we were told by the vet to taper him off over the course of weeks to prevent seizures. Just take the weaning nice and slow and take small cuts. Doctors tend to give us very fast tapering schedules that can cause problems.

Wow, I am sorry that this happened to you. And I truly hope that it doesn't happen again. I can imagine the fear of that. But try to think positive and feel safe.

Medications can be scarey when these things happen. Keep in close contact with your doctor while weaning off of meds.

MammaB3- I had a seizure on tramadol. My neuro Dr. Told me that it wasn't uncommon for that drug. I was on a high dose. I look it up afterwards and he was right. I have had 3 seizures from medication related. I know it's scary.

That is really scary. I have a prescription for that but haven't had it filled. Not sure I should after reading these posts! How old are your children?

How scary for you! Why did they think it was your blood sugar are you diabetic? I have heard tramadol can cause siezures I was on it for some time without any problems.

Thanks everyone for the kind replies. It was very scary. My kids are 4 and 2 twin boys that are 2. Luckily my husband and Dad were there and I wasn't alone when it happened.

I was told that 99% of the time if you have a seizure, it is due to low blood sugar. They took mine and it was low, so I am watching that. I'm not diabetic though. My doctor (and I think I agree) thinks it was the medication I was on.

AK Angel, you made me feel better, not that I would wish a seizure on anyone! What other medications caused you to have seizures? I have stopped the Cymbalta without many problems and I am slowly stopping the Tramadol. I have been on it almost 2 years, so I think it is going to take a while.

Anyways, thanks for the responses. It really means a lot to me to know people care. :)
