sudden Numbness & Vertigo

hi everyone,

I wanted to see if anyone else has these issues with Fibro or if it could be something else.....about two weeks ago my left hand started going numb, The doctor told me tendonitis, then it started going up my arm all the way and into my leg and face all on the left side. I went into the clinic and they thought i was having a stroke at first but thankfully i wasnt.  Its only in my arm and hand now but I also have dizziness and vertigo when I close my eyes,  about a year ago I started having problems with my speech, I slur and forget words alot.  they have sent me for ultrasounds on my neck and heart and a cat scan. the cat scan was good but I havent got results from the other tests yet. I have an MRI on Nov. 1st and I see the neurologist for the first time on wednesday.  I was diagnosed with Fibro in june, could this be part of fibro?  or could there be something else going on?  I had one positive ANA but two negative ones.

Parts of what you are describing sound like it could be part of the symptoms of fibro. However, not everything fits the bill. On the other hand, that is kind of the stigma of this condition, not everything seems to fit! Anyway, it definitely sounds like something you need to stick to your guns and insist on an answer. Let your doctors know that you are not going to be satisfied without an answer.

I've had the numb hands thing to but on both hands simultaneously and it didn't go to my legs just stayed in the hands up to the elbow.
I don't know if it's fibro or anything else. I phone my rheumy about it (i'm seeing him next wednesday) and he said that it might be something to do with nerves, some nerve beeing pinched here or there, but i won't know for sure till he gets me tested or something.

Hope ur test results all come back good and wishing u good luck with the Neuro doc!

Hi Everyone,

Flowerlover, sorry to hear about your new health issues. When you say numbness do you mean if you stuck a needle in your hand you wouldn't feel it? Or do you mean you don't have sensation there? When I first came down with fibro I had a back injury and nerve damage first started in my legs, then my arms, then the remainder of my body for the next few years. A numb feeling like I can't feel my muscles working.

I would suggest that you see a neurologist.  The fact that this is all on one side is bothersome.  Fibro happens in all four quandrants of the body.

 

I've had tingling and numbness from pinched nerves but what you are describing incorporates your entire left side...including the face.  That doesn't sound like fibro to me.  It's best to be thoroughly checked out.

So i ended up at the hospital last night and they have moved up my MRI to sometime in the next couple of days i should know today.  I had the strangest thing going on in my legs, they kept just giving out on me yesterday, I fell about 4-5 times.....so random.  My muscles are twitching all over and the numbness was all over yesterday not just left side so i went to the doctors office who sent me to the hospital.

My husband sat with me for hours thank goodness because I was a little worried.....the ER doc doesn't think MS thank god but they want to get the MRI done before i see the neurologist on wednesday.

My numbness is hard to explain because I've never had it before at all, if you run your finger down my arm when it is numb i barely feel it at all and tingling in my lips and face was a little strange.  I'm off work now for atleast a week; for some reason they don't think it's safe to let me go to work.....lol...my legs feel jellowy it's very strange and a little frightening.

Are you seeing a neurologist or your rheumatologist on Wednesday?  I hope it's the neurologist.   I think a neurologist can address these symptoms better.  I'm not a doctor but that's where I would be headed.

I'm seeing the neurologist on wednesday, but part of me is worried to get an answer and part of me is worried i won't get an answer and they'll tell me it's all in my head or it's stress....then I'll just start thinking I'm crazy.....it's sad how we all think really isn't it?

Don't let fear and anxiety get to you like that.  That just makes things worse.  You want to know what is going on so you can get the help you need.  This isn't all in your head.  It could be something that is easily taken care of so don't conjure up terrible thoughts in your head.  Try to relax and take one day at a time. 

 

Look how frightened we were before our diagnosis of fibro!  Many thought something horrible was happening.  But, even though fibro is no fun, we can still live a good life in spite of it. 

 

So, relax.  Let the doctors do their work.  Obviously they think something is going on.  Your doctor sent you to the ER.  The ER wants an MRI taken before you see the neurologist.  So, no, it's not all in  your head and you will find out what is happening and get help so you feel better again!

 

I'll keep you in my prayers and let us know what you find out.

I agree with Sherrine. Think about it, could you MAKE your body do all that if you tried? No you're not imagining it. Let us know what you find out & we'll be thinking good thoughts & I'll pray for a good result they can help you with. The limbo of not knowing is scary.

good afternoon !  so no answers yet, I've had my cat scan,ultrasound on my neck and heart, blood tests and my MRI.  The only one i haven't got results back for is my MRI which was two days ago.  The neurologist doesn't think there will be any answers with the MRI they seem to be leaning towards stress causing all of my symptoms.

I have a new symptom as well that started last week, it goes along with the numbness, vertigo and balance issues that are still there. I'm having random muscle jerks, my arm flies up my head jerks back, leg muscles jump and my torso jumps......it's pretty freaky.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has been through this and can it really be stress? or one of fibro's symptoms?  I found out today that I'm not covered through my work for short term disability, my work didn't send in the three month waiver within the 31 days they were supposed to so my benefits don't start till nov. 1st.  The company is saying they won't cover this because i've been off already so it's considered preexisting condition.......like I need more stress !!

I tried to go out yesterday with my mom for a few hours, went through one store and had to leave because I lost my balance and almost went down again, it happens so quick......does anyone else know anyone that has this going on or had in the past? I'm lost....

Try googling your symptoms.  See what comes up.  I had to do that last month.  I'm diabetic and my blood sugar was all over the place.  The diagnosis was stress.  Sorry.  That "diagnosis" is used too much so I started searching.  Bottom line was I was extremely anemic and that was causing all of my problems...extreme fatigue, shortness of breath (I was given an inhaler for that!  LOL).  But by googling my symptoms I saw that iron deficiency anemia had the same symptoms and I then asked my doctor to run blood work for that. 

 

I know I wouldn't settle for the stress diagnosis...when you have your arms flying and you are falling, etc.  Stress can cause the numbness and the vertigo (anxiety).  I'm not a doctor but if this were happening to me I'd still be searching.  I hope you do find some answers.  It has to be frightening.

thx for the advice and your right, I really don't think its from stress.....I'll keep pushing until they figure it out.  I'd like them to have a good look at my neck, it's always crunching and cracking and I did have a pretty bad skiing accident, maybe it's some injury in my neck or something.....and yah it is very scary, but I'm trying to stay positive,
