Hi, ScaredFibro, and welcome. I'm glad you found us and joined in. Fibromyalgia can be a very frightening illness. We have so many varied symptoms that actually mimic other more serious illnesses. That's why we need a complete work-up from the doctor to rule out other illnesses.
Most with fibro do suffer from anxiety and depression. Those are worse than the pain, I think. Anxiety is fear but you really don't have anything to be afraid of. You don't die from fibro. You learn what works for you to control the pain and then go on to enjoy your life. Yes, that is very possible. I've had fibro for 24 years and have had a full and enjoyable life in spite of this illness. But the stress and anxiety can make your pain worse so try to relax as much as you can.
Depression? I don't usually suffer from depression but, when my husband died, I sure got a serious dose of it. Yes, I used to go to bed at night and pray to be taken by the Lord. I didn't want to be here, either. That's depression! But, I kept perservering, making myself go out and be with people, etc. and my happiness returned.
I'm a positive thinker and that has helped me a lot with fibro. I bet if you counted all your blessings, you would be surprised how fortunate you are. I don't look at the negative things going on in my life because that doesn't change a thing and just makes me miserable and everyone around me miserable too. I just focus on the good things that are all around me.
Be sure to read Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum. There are links to good information about fibro and you will learn a lot there. Start out with the links called Symptoms, What Else Could It Be, and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia. There also is a good post about steps for positive thinking. This really helps a lot.
I use vitamin D3 and malic acid/magnesium supplements to help with pain and fatigue. There are links about these in Fibro 101 and it tells how they work in your body. I also use Tylenol and I usually use ibuprofen but developed a bleeding ulcer so I'm off that for the time being.
I also do gentle stretching exercises (found in Fibro 101), daily exercises (I walk and/or swim as my exercise. Yoga is good, too.), and I get gentle massages. No deep massages for me! Lastly I pace myself. Everything gets done but in a different time frame. All of the above help me be in control of my pain. I'm not pain-free, but I still have a great life! I don't dwell on the pain but just work around it and I have a great life!
So, no, this is not all in your head. You might read the link in Fibro 101 called Doctors Respond to New York Times Article. These are doctors that are studying this illness. Fibromyalgia is recognized by the American Medical Association, the American College of Rheumatology, the National Institute of Health, and the World Health Organization...to name a few! It is a VERY real illness. What you need to do is find a doctor that treats fibro patients. There are still doctors out there that don't think this is a real illness. Pretty sad, huh? Many see a rheumatologist for their fibro. My board certified Internist treats my fibro and everything else I have. But, check doctor's ads in the phone book. Many list what they treat. Or, call and ask if they treat fibromyalgia patients before you make an appointment. There is help out there.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. Don't hesitate to ask questions because we are here to help you. Hope to hear more from you soon.
