Can fibro make you feel like you have the flu?

Hi all,

 

I've had fibro for so long, yet I've never had these symptoms before.  I just had surgery (hysterectomy) on November 5.  I was doing great until 3 days ago.  I think my fibro has flared up big time due to the stress of the surgery, etc.  Today, I've felt like I've had the flu all day, but my appetite is fine, no vomiting, no fever, no chills or sweats, nothing that would scream "the flu".  I know my lupus can make me feel this way, but I don't have any other symptoms of it right now either.  It's actually very quiet.

 

Can Fibro be bad enough that it presents flu-like feelings?  General, all over malaise, no energy, fatigue, etc?  If so, this is unbelievably bad.....

Well, I have both chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia and yes both, can give flu like feelings. It usually means that I have to rest, rest and rest.

Please slow down and pace yourself. I find it more difficult to recover from surgery with fibro. You need to rest dearie.

Yup. Fibro can do that. And it will take quite a while to recover from the surgery. It took me about3 weeks longer than expected to recover from my hysterectomy. You also need to be on hormone replacement or you will go into surgical menopause which can make you feel like that too. So have the doc discuss the pros and cons of HRT to see what is best for you.

When I first read about fibro, after diagnosis, it said flu like symptoms. Well, it said it was like when you had a bad flu. So yes it can make you feel like you have a really bad flu.

It's happened to me a couple of times. Every muscle in my body was hurting and I didn't want to move. I've had the flu once and it felt just like it, but without the fever. I hope you feel better soon.

Yes, I feel like my body is fighting off a virus or infection sometimes but no symptoms but fibro ever appear. I have ran low grade temps when I'm like that. I don't know what our bodies are fighting when we get like that.

 

I have not had to have surgery since getting fibro, knock on wood, but I would imagine it would send you into a bad flare. Give yourself plenty of time to heal.

Thanks everyone.  This puts my mind at ease.  I feel better today, but not 100%.  I'm pretty sure this is my fibro acting up.  I have horrible junk in my sinuses too, and I know for sure that is my fibro.  Fun times.  Yeah, recovering from surgery during an active fibro flare, is not recommended, LOL.  I'm resting a ton and that really helps.

I have felt like i have constant flu for the past 22yrs. Diagnosed with ME in 1999. It is getting worse though now.

After changing GPs, i finally was referred to a rheumatologist and had my diagnosis of fibromyalgia.

Now i am worried that i will not be able to work the same as i am getting worse every day.

Ginny, sorry to hear about your symptoms. See if staying away from sugar and high-fat foods helps. Then trying taking some good supplements. I do get nauseous and weaker if I don't eat healthy or if I eat chocolate.

I have been started on new meds but i feel so depressed that my life is what it is.

I have 4 wonderful children and work as a midwife but it is getting too much.

Am i letting this illness win? How do you stop it taking over?

I think i was just so relieved when i was diagnosed because i started to think it was just me. It was all in my head, but now i know it isn`t.

I often feel as though I have the flu - terrible fatigue and a low grade fever.  Eating, moving and heck, even thinking is hard during those times.  Caring for my two young daughters?  Very, very challenging.

Yeah i think that's just one of those things with fibro.
I'm having one of them days myself actualy, am very exhausted and painfull mucsles all over.
