I was diagnosed with fibro almost three years ago, and I've gotten accustomed to the traveling joint pain. But over the last few weeks, I've been sporadically getting terrible pain in the muscles that run over the bottoms of my ribcage, right beneath my breasts. It makes my chest feel tight and I get extremely nauseated, and there's no comfortable position for me to be in. I've talked to my doctors about this and they always brush it off because I'm young. Does anyone else get this? And if so, do you know what I can do to help stop it or at least make it calm down?

I was dx'd early this year with Fibro... and have had all the normal aches and pains, etc. that go along with it.  I've been having this viscious rib pain... bone pain (both sides are sore, but the ribs on the lower left side are really bad)... it's so painful that it wakes me at night, especially if I roll over on them.  I've also got this really bad chest pain in my left side... right at the top of my breast, that radiates through to my back left shoulder blade... excrusiating at times.  It feels like someone has run me through with a spear and is yanking and twisting it.  I saw the doctor and she belives that it is chostcondritis, but with the accompnaied rib pain, I'm not convinced.  No matter what I take, nothing works when this pain is at it's highest... Advin Tylenol with codene, Anaprox... nothing.

I aslo have anemia... my B12 levels were last at 130 and I was tested for pernicious anemia... still waiting to see the intern for that test result.  o the rib pain, coupled with the radiating chest/back pain, coupled with the anemia... I was clearly not comfortable with not looking further into it.  I just had a bone scan this week to see if there are issues with my bones.  From what I can gather Meyloma can cause bone pain like this... and with the anemia... well better to be safe, right? 

I'll keep you posted about what I hear back.

What you were saying about feeling like someone's run you through with a spear, I get the exact same thing. I go to the chiropractor, they said my intercostals are inflamed and they adjust my rib heads and tell me to ice it. It helps with the stabbing feeling that goes through my chest a little bit, but it doesn't effect the rib pain at all. Do you find that the pains come at the same time? Or do they sometimes happen individually?

Hey again sirenseranade1,

They are there most of of the time... that is the pain is always there, just worse some days than others.  Sometimes they flare up and get worse together... those days really are unbearable, and sometimes one hurts more than the other.  Yesterday the ribs were painful and the chest was bearable.  I had a massage therapy appointment last night (1 full hour on my back... and she is aware of my Fibro so she doesn't overdo the pressure), and today, the back and chest are worse... but the rib pain is still there. 

Hey, do you have any trouble with anemia, or recurrent bronchitisor sinus infections?  I seem to be super suseptible to those too.  It makes taking a full breath really painful with the chest pain.  And with the lack of energy due to the anemia, I'm in bed right after my 3 year old every night. They did an ultrasound of my liver, pancreas, kidneys and spleen too so see about stones or swelling.  I'm just hoping to get some results soon.  This stuff is really worrying me.  confused

Hi,

A couple months ago I had rib pain at the top of my L breast. It hurt so bad I had trouble breathing. I went to the doctor and had an EKG done. He prescribed an inhaler that didn't do anything for me. The next day I went to my chiropractor and he said I had a rib out of alignment. He adjusted me in that area and the discomfort was gone.

If you choose to go to a chiropractor make sure you talk with him on the phone or do a free consultation to see if he understands fibro and what you're going through.

Sirenseranade - I get something like this too. For me it feels like a deep twisting, tight, aching kind of pain... it's hard to describe but it kinda feels like someone is squeezing me way too tight..

Since the pain gets worse with movement or exercise, the best thing for me to do is just to rest until the pain passes, but I'm not sure if that's the sort of suggestion you are looking for. A cold compress sometimes helps, too.

Hi, and welcome!  This kind of sounds like costochondritis.  Many people with fibro have this...including me.  My doctor had me taking ibuprofen with food to help this.  Here is a link all about it.

Sirenseranade, just thought I'd follow up to let you know that the bone scan I had was normal... seeing the doctor this morning for the continued chest pain and rib pain on the left side... still there and was worse yesterday. Seemed to have a swollen glad in my left armpit yesterday too, as well as a sore and tender spot on my left breast. Want to get it checked out. Hope your chest pain is lessening.

Sherrine, Thank you for posting the link. I get this pain off and on for the past 6 months too. I told my doc and she pretty much just ignored it and said nothing. I am glad to know that it is probably not something that is serious. Thank you all very much.
