Hi all. I was just wondering if anyone else that is taking tramadol had any bad experiences when they first started taking them. I was prescribed 150mg twice a day yesterday and have taken 3 tablets so far. Since last night I have never felt so sore. My FM symptoms have gotten worse and I have a really bad headache that travels down my spine to the base. My skin hurts to touch and I'm nauseous. I didn't sleep at all last night either. I don't think I'll take them anymore. I thought they were strong painkillers instead of causing more pain than I originally had!!! Thanks all.

I think the problem is the dosage you were prescribed is way too high to start out or even use long term. I started out with 50mg twice a day then went to 100mg after a period of time (can't remember how long). I now use 100mg 3xday with permission from my PM to use 4xday if needed when I am flaring. As far as I know, 100mg is the max does taken at one time with 400mg max daily. I'd speak with your doctor about
cutting back your dosage until your body gets used to it. For about
two weeks after starting the tramadol I felt kind of speeded up and not quite myself but with time that stopped.
I also take tylenol with my tramadol. Ibuprophen could be used also if that works best for you as an anti-inflammatory. My doctor also recommended this and it does help with my pain levels.
Good luck and don't give up on the tramadol just yet. Try cutting back your dosage to start out and it just might work for you. Everyone is different though and some people can't tolerate the tramadol.

Yes, that's a LOT of tramadol to be taking at one time. No wonder you feel icky. Definitely give your doc a call and let them know what's going on. I have to take tylenol with my tramadol because it doesn't work at all otherwise. I'd ask your doc about
that, also, so you don't have to take so much tramadol and bother your stomach.

150mgs?? Wow, that's a high dose! I can't take Tramadol - I think I'm allergic to it but I used to take it before. I would take 50mgs every 4-6 hours or so. Definitely try a lowered dose and see if you can tolerate it.

Thanks a million for your replies. Yep, I think I better have a talk with my Doc. I was taking ixprim which are 37.5mg tramadol and paracetamol. The dose was increased to 2 tablets 3 times a day. I was only getting some relief from them so my Doc increased to 150mg twice a day. They are slow release if that makes a difference.
I'm starting to feel a bit better now but still have a pounding headache. That was very a strange reaction. Thanks again for all your help, my Doc should be calling back in an hour.

I agree that it sounds like a very high dose. I am allergic to tramadol so I never got beyond the first dose to know if it would work for me.

Wow, that is a high dose! I was originally prescribed 50mg and I ended up cutting them in half for the first few months. I could never take it before bed, I'd never sleep. It gives me energy for the first 3 hours or so then I feel relaxed and can sleep if I want to. I learned to time my doses so I had energy when I needed it and could sleep (quite well!) when I wanted to.
I took tramadol for years and built up a tolerance so I needed to increase my doses. Even at my peak, I wouldn't be able to function on 150mg at once. I'd be too stoned to move!
Tramadol can cause something called serotonin syndrome (there's info in Fibro 101 above). While it is considered rare, you should read about
it if you are taking tramadol.

You have to be very careful with tramadol. I had a grandmal seizure on them. The high dose caused my seizure. My neurologist said it 's not uncommon to have seizures with tramadol. He treated a lot of patients with this problem. I defiantly would talk to a pharmacist also on your dose and side effects. They usually have better knowledge then Dr's do.

hat does sound like a high dose. My Dr. started me of with 50mg 2x a day and now I take it 4x a day. Also if you go on it long term it's good to have your kidneys checked once in a while.
