I have been having pain and general discomfort in my urethra since Fall. I had 3 UTI's between September and December and since then I have been having this problem. I went to my pelvic doctor/urogyn and he had me try an estrogen product in my vagina and thought the tissue being weak could be causing symptoms I'm 63 yrs. old. The Estrace isn't working, but I do get relief from Pyridium - one pill and I'm OK for about 10 days. I have one pill left. I was on the Mayo Clinic website and guess what? One of the causes could be Fibro causing spasms. I am going to call my Dr. but was wondering if any of you have had these symptoms and were they attributed to Fibro. My urine cultures are coming back negative.  Thanks for your replies! Anne

You can buy pryidium over the counter. Just be careful this drug can make you nauseated easily. Always eat with it. My daughter sometimes has to use 1/2 tab. Make sure you are not bathing in something with fragrance or bubble baths stuff. I never heard this is fibro related. Maybe someone has some views on it.

ak angel, Thank you for replying to my post. I didn't know pyridium was over the counter. I am seeing my pelvic doctor tomorrow. I don't think this is fibro related either-I tend to look fibro in the eye evertime I don't feel well rolleyes .  Thanks again and hope you are well. Anne

Hey Anne,

Yes, Fibromyalsia can cause frequent urination, bladder spasms and incontinence. I am only 32 and suffer urinary problems. When we go out I use the restroom every twenty minutes. If not then I begin to ache and it does feel like it is my urethra!!!! I recently went to my OB to see if i had a UTI or infection. Nothing! My doc thinks i am nuts! have not been put on any meds for it, but he did give me a steroid cream to try. It does not seem to help. I did research on the web and read several articles that discuss this problem. I was in two months ago complaining about the same problems and my OB gave me some anti-spasm bladder pills which worked wonders( but turned your urine bright orange). When I asked for more he told me that they are not a long term solution and should be used sparingly. So much for that. I wish I could find a solution bc it is so uncomfortable. I even tried buying special feminine wash bc I thought it was my soap. No solutions. My MD is thinking of doing a bladder test.

I am almost 53 and have had urinary troubles my entire life. I have IC and it flares from time to time. I would strongly urge you to see a urologist. I get infections in the wall of my bladder that cause intense spasms that get as strong as childbirth. These do not show up on your standard dip stick test for infection because the infection is contained within the wall of the bladder (due to tiny pin holes in the lining of the bladder wall). Some testing might be needed to rule out a certain type of infection. (You need to rule out infection so it doesn't track back to the kidney which can turn life threatening if untreated.)

If your bladder is starting to sag some due to age and muscle stretching that can also cause spasms. My gyn was willing to give some things as to just having had large babies and let things slide. (this is one of the most miserable pains there is I think). Thankfully I have had wonderful urologist that knew exactly what I was speaking of and offered prompt attention.)

Back in 93, I had a HORRIBLE Navy Urologist that said I was in need of a phsyc. appt because I was complaining of pain and it was so little infection...........I toughed it out until we had a new urologist and I was in the ER throwing up from a kidney stone. He listened and he tested me and found out the IC problem and was a lifesaver! Thank the Lord for wonderful drs!

(P.S. also one thing that we found out, if your husband/partner is taking medications that you are allergic to, it can cause a response of your body to those drugs through sharing of body fluids if you are highly sensitive.)

Pyridium is the drug that causes your urine to turn orange or dark yellow. Caution though... it is very tough on the liver... so I was told that if I used it, to use no more than a few days at a time and drink TONS of water with it to keep kidneys flushed. Have IC here too...

it can cause MAJOR urethra pain. ive been doubled over on the pot trying to hold back from urinating because it hurt so badly. its not in your head.

That is a lot of UTI's in a short period of time. I'm wondering if your urethra is just still irritated. I have chronic kidney stones, and after one bout with them, my urethra just remained irritated. I had a scope done and was told that what should be smooth tissue was "bumpy" (sorry if that's TMI, lol). I was put on a very low dose of Macrobid (a urinary tract antibiotic) for a few weeks, and my symptoms went away. My urine cultures were negative, too.
