I was just kind of daydreaming, when it struck me.....

First off, every one of us knows exactly what it's like to have FM, while most of the rest of the human population just can't even start to imagine, right ?

Well guess what ? I have another situation which most people just can't start to imagine....

I was born strongly left handed, but forced to be right handed, by old school parents who thought life would be easier for a right hander > not understanding that your brain is wired to your body in a certain way for a good reason !

My hand-eye coordination was so whacked out / destroyed, you can't imagine.

If their were 100 kids participating in sports, I would be dead last, every time. And kids are cruel right ? So basically, I flat refused to play any sports. I learned to despise sports, and competition in general !

Uh, what else.... If I write more than a sentence or two, my hands and fingers start cramping... can't sign my own name twice, and have it look the same ?

Oh, and I'm basically a one finger typer :) So I hope you can appreciate the effort here :) LOL

Anyway, I swear if I hear 1 more time, about my typing..... or any other thing that requires physical dexterity > "you just need to practice" or "take lessons"....

URRRGGG ! People are just as clueless about my hand-eye coordination issues as they are about FM.....

And have you ever noticed how the people who don't have issues like this, so often seem to be the experts on how to treat, or cure them ? Uhhh... okay rolleyes

That's my rant. I'm better now smilewinkgrin

Hey Fish...I appreciate what you are saying...in a sense we all have some type of disability....but there are ways to work around them

For ten years, I was lucky to have a career where I provided direct supervision to about 50 mentally disabled adults in a production work enviroment. It was my job to train these "clients" to perform tasks in accordance with their abilities. The joy on their faces when they learned a new skill always warmed my heart.

This group did subcontract work for area businesses and quality was a must.
Repetition and finding alternative ways to get better and putting forth the effort works.

I believe working with this group has helped me with my personal challenges. They taught me more than I ever taught them :)

It was wonderful to help this group realize their potential. Sometimes people need others to motivate them or have faith in them.

It was a big issue in "the old days" that if your child was born left-handed, they would beat your hand until you learned to write with your right. A left-handed person was said to be cack-handed (at least in Scotland) and they were treated like there was something wrong with them.

Fish...being left handed and almost 60...I remember being in 1st grade and a nun tried to make me right handed...I refused and my Mom, said to let me be. My penmanship was once beautiful...as a left handed person you do realize that it is a right-handed world...learning to tie shoes from someone who is right handed is tricky.

I can only imagine it is easier be a left-handed person coping in a right handed world than to be forced to switch and remain right handed.

Differant situations have taught me to be ambidextrius...spelling???

I still think we all have a dissabilty of some kind and that challenge forces us to become stronger in some way.

Ha ..i come from a long line of lefty's....besides left handed people are the only one's in thier "right" mind (the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, ergo...)

I remember my dad telling me as I entered 1st grade to let him know if anyone ever tried to make me right-handed. (He had a teacher that used to hit him every time he was caught using his left hand.)

I am left-handed, but do some things right handed. (scissors, batting, sweeping) Other things, I would end up getting hurt if I tried to change them to doing with my right hand.

One of my 3 children is left-handed. (I think that one of my grandsons is going to be left handed.)

I think that it was cruel for people to try and force kids to be the opposite that they are wired to be. If I remember correctly, forcing someone at a young age can cause learning disabilities. (seems like I remember reading that a long time ago.)

Ha ! That isn't no joke ! I have a hard time articulating all of the effects that it has had on me ! And ya' know, for whatever reason, I never even considered this until just now....

But if I was always busy using 110% of my attention, while trying to use "the wrong hand" to write with, I wonder if that had anything to do with me ending up with ADD ?

In any case almost "nothing" that comes naturally to most people, after doing it a few X's, comes natural to me. No, really ! I mean even goofy little stuff like sweeping or mopping. I mean, I've done these things a handful of X's when I was forced to (at work or something) then everybody stops to watch and make jokes about how stupid I look trying to sweep or mop.... and say stuff like, "Haven't you ever used a broom before" ?

Oh yea'..... Life sure is easier for a right hander rolleyes

Hey, I have a fun / interesting little story for you guys :)

One time a few years ago, my work took me to a house in my town. I rang the doorbell, and as I waited, I looked down to see a box full of trash, and on the side, it had written, "Tax Papers"...... but the really weird thing was, the goofy, oddball handwriting, looked exactly like MY own goofy, oddball hand writing ! NOBODY writes like me ! Yet I could not even tell it apart from my own writing ! Crazy ! Never seen anybody write like me in the 40+ years of my life !

So, the guy comes to the door... we conduct business. As I was fixing to leave, I had to mention, "Hey BTW, the writing on that box looks really different, and "exactly" like my own" !

The guy kind of chuckled and said, "I'm sorry..... but that's my messed up hand writing".

So I told him, "Well I actually know why my writing is so goofy... I was born left handed, and forced to be right handed"....

The guy looked at me with a surprised look and said > "So was I" !!! shocked Absolutely 100% true story !

So I guess just like with FM..... we start to think we are the only ones who could possibly understand. But when your talking about 7 billion humans (and counting) on the planet "somebody" out there is going through the exact same things as we are......
