Ganglion cyst, fibro, or both?

Hi all,

I've been having problems with my wrist on and off for about 9 months now. It started as just pain, then there was a little bump sometimes which I ignored (I can just imagine how my doctor would have looked at me if I tried to show him the teeny little bump...), then there was a marble-sized bump all the time. I finally saw a doctor at the university medical center who told me this is a ganglion cyst and should not cause any pain. They did an Xray and everything was fine. But I continue to have pretty intense pain in that wrist, and it feels like it's radiating from the cyst. I suppose I could try to see a specialist or something, but it would take a LOT of effort (I recently moved across the country and never bothered getting a doctor since they can't do anything to help me anyways). Not sure if it's worth it, or if this is just some kind of massive flare-up. Anyone have any advice?

I can't understand a doctor telling you that a ganglion cyst shouldn't cause pain! They can be extremely painful depending upon the size of them. I found an excellent website with some explanations that may help you decide if you want the surgery or not.

My friend had a ganglion cyst on her wrist and her brother took a book and smacked it and it dissolved and she never had a problem!  shocked    I guess that's what they did in the "old days"!

Hahaha, Sherrine!  That is hilarious.  Maybe I need to do that to my ganglion wrist cysts!  Smack them with something.

 

I have two pea sized ganglion cysts in my left wrist. They have never caused any pain whatsoever. I've had them for as long as i can remember.  I guess it depends on their size and where they're located.

The "smash with a book" treatment is still current today and an accepted medical procedure, honest!

Eep! I can't imagine whacking my poor wrist hard enough to shatter that thing. It's a fairly hard little lump!

I don't know what that doctor is talking about either!  eyes  I had one that at first started out at about the size of a pea and then grew to a size of a  small pingpong ball and yipes it hurt like heck!!. Anyway I had a hand doc remove it. That was a good 15 years ago and no problems now.

I have been experiencing exactly the same symptoms as yours since October 2007 and I was leaving in Cambridge MA at this time and I went to Crane Beach too for a week-end.
Everything started with some pain in my right knee that then extended to all large joints with muscle aches-twitches, dizziness, and huge fatigue as well as low grade fever. Fever than disapperaed but pain and aches remained, mostly in the joints. I have experienced cycles in pain and dizziness seemed to come on and off at first. Now it has seemed to fade away after several courses of antibiotics. I am also experiencing burning, or needle like sensation on my skin. I also have a tinnitus that can be awful some days. Finally since about 3 months I am having a dry eye syndrom (due to blepharitis)
I have been diagnosed with Lyme, but blood tests are still negative (on the lower border).
I was on doxycline for a month in Januray and it gave me a huge tinnitus and pain increased when I stopped the antibiotics.
Then Azythromicin (1 month) helped quite well and I felt much better.
Finally I took doxycline again 2 months ago and it again gave me much pain at the end but my brain was much less foggy.
It seems to me that our symptoms are extremely similar and we were living in the same area so there might be a correlation between both. (Crane Beach?)
It would be great if we could share our point of view on the efficients treatments (for me Azythromicin has been the most helpful as well as very hot and humid weather conditions).

Talking about whacking a ganglion cyst with a book, I have heard them called "Bible bumps" I think because by someone standards a Bible is about the right sized book to do the job. Even using the good book I think I would be hard pressed to give that therapy a try. Lisa

ha ha - that is funny.
I had a fairly large one about 10 years ago, just 2 years after I had cancer and I was terrified it was back (in my wrist). Doctor dx it as a gangleon cyst and said that sometimes people say you can "wish them away". I was heavy into mind-over-matter stuff (prayer, meditation, etc.) at the time and so I tried it...guess what? It disappeared!

Bible-whacking may have been faster, though....lol

Hi! Sorry I haven't been reading your messages. I'd love to trade notes on this, though I'm not wholly convinced I have Lyme. I tried doxycycline for about 3 months or so with no huge difference, then switched to Ceftin for about a month or two. I don't think either of them helped me a whole lot. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to penicillin and all its friends, so that limited my options a little.
