Excuse me if this sounds gross...

At first I thought this was just a yeast infection....so i treated it with over the counter meds...

Then I noticed swelling on one side only (vulva)...the itching and pain is just awful.

Last week I told my doc about it and she said it sounded like vulvodynia but did not look at it.

I still have the swelling (one side, left vulva area) the pain and intense itching.

So, I grabbed a mirror and looked at it today....it is a large area that has turned a flaky white...looks like
elephant skin, about the diameter of an egg.

Anyone know what this can be or have you experienced this?

I first treated it two months ago when I thought it was a yeast infection, so I have had it for awhile!

Leave it alone for a while. If you have been putting various products on it, it might just be seriously out of whack. The vagina has its own PH balance and doesn't Really like soap or lotions or other things. Just use water.

It just sounds irritated.

Yeah, I'd leave it alone and see what happens. My general rule of thumb is to give any non-emergent issue three days and see what happens. It's either going to stay the same, get better or get worse. If it gets worse or stays the same in the three days it might be worth a trip to the doc to have her look at it.

I am kind of surprised your doctor didn't take a look at you when you told her about it. I agree about the ph balance. I can't use any of the over the counter meds, always used the diflucan. There are tests that you can use to try to tell what is wrong. I have seen them advertised on tv.

I hope that you feel better soon. I would stick with baby lotion if you use anything on your skin. But I think Myself is right, just use water for now.

If I was that miserable I would call for appointment for at least on Tuesday or Wednesday. That way it gives you a few days to see what it's going to do. Sometimes the moisture and heat can really cause irritation down there. Keeping the perineum dry usually helps. Try wearing a dress or skirt and no pants. This allows more air to the perineum.

thanks for the input...it is driving me nuts! I am not shocked that the doctor didnt look at it...my health care is very poor here...it is like the docs just dont have time to fool with ya. I am due for my yearly soooooo, I will call for an appt and kill two birds with one stone.

get a new doctor trust me. by law yoou are entitled second medical opinions. that second opinion can be as many as you wnat lol

Since I first posted this (June 30th) I have been absolutely miserable. My pain and itching is still one sided (left vulva) and very intense. Now the white patch is larger. I have a painful itch in my left groin area off an on but no lumps. I am not using any creams. I do sitz baths and no body wash or soap. I noticed I have a greyish discharge that smells odd. The discharge started a week ago. I have had yeast before and this is a different color/consistancy/smell. I missed my cycle last month, sooo I thought maybe I was going to start yesterday and that the discharge maybe was from that. No cycle yet. I also started in with some low cramping. I was dx with an ovarian cyst on the left side about a year ago. I just dont think this is vulvodynia like my doctor said it was (without examining it) and I can't get in to see her til late next month! UGH! Wonder if Urgent Care would look at me? Nothing helps :(

Yes, go to urgent care, by all means! I know it's hard to go in and ask them to look at something like this, but when you think about it, it's just a part of your body, like any other, and I'm sure it won't be the first time they've seen it.

It really sounds like you need medical help NOW. Theres no reason to wait! You can't get in to your doctor for over a month?? How would you stand that?

So, I went to Urgent Care this morning (65 miles round trip)..............they were CLOSED.......!!! Going to lay down for a bit, feeling totally crappy...going to call them later to see when they open and hopefully I can go back. UGH!

Wow, I called the Urgent Care, they are finally open and explained what was going on (to save driving down there, just in case) She said "they wouldnt see me for something like that"................nice eh

You need a gynecologist, that's probably why urgent care said no. Either have your gyno's office call you when someone cancels, or find a new doctor who can see you within the next few days. I WOULD NOT wait a month with all the discomfort you're living with.

Well, I FINALLY got in to see the gyno today. He diagnosed me with lichen sclerosis and did 3 punch biopsies of the area....He did numb it but it is waking up now and it hurtsssss. He will contact me in 7 days to let me know if it is cancerous. If it is not cancerous, I have to have it checked every 6 months and use this prescription cream for the rest of my life.

Oh wow, Lori! I can imagine the pain you must be in now. Hope it eases up quickly. Take it easy if you can...

I'm so glad you finally got into a doctor! Now the wait - always hard when it could be cancer. I've never heard of lichen sclerosis before. Just when I think I've heard it all - -

The pain is better. Had a nice nap with Lortab. Lichen Sclerosis is an uncommon thing. It occurs when the immune system is out of whack. I am sure fibro plays a part. My immune system is low. The wait will be hard for sure. Looking forward to a sitz bath tomorrow!

i'm sorry to hear of your pain, but at least now you know what it is and can tackle this head on.
i just have a concern, did u ask your doc about the sitz baths? I'm concerned they might be irritating it more especially if u are.using any kind of salts in them. Just ask your doc (if you haven't already) just to be on the safe side. I hope everything workks out for u, and God willing it will not be cancerous.

I called and asked the doctor and I can have just a warm bath with nothing in it or I can shower with no soap for 5 days. I tell ya, ever since I was diagnosed with fibro, I have had everything under the sun. Have a great day, I am just going to sit on my donut pillow all day!
