New Flu Shot

Has anyone gotten, or is anyone planning to get the new intradermal flu shot? Here is the info about it:

It supposedly is injected into the skin instead of the muscle, so if I understand it correctly, it causes less muscle pain. It does seem to cause more skin reactions, though. I'm wondering if it might be a better choice for fibromites (those of us who take flu shots) because it won't aggravate the muscle.

What do you think?

Hi:  Personally, neither I nor any of my family ever get flu shots.  I've known several people who get the shot every year, then come down with a nasty flu anyway.

Also, several years ago when there was the 'swine flu' scare, our family went to get the shots to prevent it.  I don't recall if any of us ever got the flu (this was back in the early '70s and my poor brain doesn't recall(!), but my sister ended up getting Bell's Palsy, and a neurologist believed it came from getting that shot. smhair

I see my rheumy next week, and plan to ask him about it. In recent years, I never got the flu shot and somehow avoided the flu. This year, I might consider it because of my recent lung surgery. The chance of skin reactions is something I would want further info on...wouldn't want something to trigger a strange autoimmune response....I am sometimes leary of new meds that first come out on the market.

I get flu shots every year and have never had a problem...not even a sore arm. So, I'll get whatever he is giving out. I never heard of the under the skin type.

I had the flu when I was 18 and thought I was going to die. As soon as I could afford it I started to get them every year.
My arm always throbs for a week or more after I get one. I'm interested in one that doesn't hurt.

***Don't forget your shingles shot and pnuemonia shot.

I always get the shot, whatever it is. I have contact with lots a sick and germy college students. Any potential discomfort with the shot is far outweighed from the benefits, IMO.

I have asthma, so I always get a flu shot, but I always also have a pretty sore arm for a week, so I dread that. The intradermal sounds good, but I am leary too of it being so new.

I get my flu shot every year now, I get a little sick but far from how sick I could get if I catch the flu.

Those that have experienced sore arms or are needle-phobic, there is a flu mist. :-) It's a one puff nasal spray the doctor squirts in your nose instead of stabbing your arm. Just another suggestion. :-)

I've gotten the flu shot for the last four years because my wife's employer provided it for free, and if Medicaid covers it I'll get it again this year. I always have an achy arm for at least three days afterward but haven't gotten the flu so far, so it's been worth it. I did get H1N1 very early the first year it was around but the vaccine didn't cover that that year. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, seriously, I was really really sick for over a week. The intradermal sounds interesting, but I'll probably hold off because it's so new. I don't need anything else possibly causing immunological issues.

The flu mist uses live viruses. Since I have lupus I'm not allowed to do live viruses shots.

I've gotten a flu shot since 1995 never had any problems other than minor soreness at the site. Well this year on 9/24 I was given the intradermal (was not given a choice for IM vaccine). It HURT I had open heart surgery 3 months ago and have FMS I know pain. I actually yelled Ow it was not the flu shot I remember. It was not the person either afterwards he explained this intradermal is more painful despite the smaller needle! Well on top of that I'm having injection site reactions immediate aches then redness itchiness swelling followed by a hard lump silver dollar size now deep red & purplish. Stiffness in upper arm headache feeling terrible (flu like). Neve doing intradermal again! Husband got regular IM ( he had a choice ) ... You can bet the kids are getting IM too! Hubby is ill now not sure if this years is causing more flu like side effects but the intradermal I injection side effects are horrible for me.

I went to the doctor yesterday for my physical and she wants me to get the flu shot because now it is supposed to prevent pertussis or whooping cough which I guess is on the rise again? I have never had the flu and am afraid that if I get it then I am going to get very sick and I can't afford to be sick. I also got a B12 shot yesterday and I feel like my arm is going to fall off it is so painful at the injection site. It's ridiculous how much it hurts. In jest, my husband was calling me a baby last night and I feel like a baby because it sounds stupid but it hurts!
