OT - sinus rinse problem - Advice?

Hi All,

A couple of days ago I saw my regular doctor. I have a lot of drainage in the back of my red throat, so he gave me a Neil-Med saline rinse bottle and told me to use it as needed. (If any of you have done this, you squirt the saline solution up one nostril and it drains out the other, bringing yucky stuff with it.)

The first nostril cleaned out just like it was supposed to, but with the second one, it took a lot longer for the water to start coming out, and not that much ever did. I did feel some pain in my sinuses, but as we all know, there's pain and then there's PAIN! and this was just a little discomfort, really. I figured it was just because the bottle was emptier and the pressure was different (or something) and I was just being dramatic.

I got kind of an ice cream headache for the rest of the day, and felt pressure in my ear. Called the doc's office; his assistant got back to me, saying he can't do anything, and "don't do it again today," and there's nothing to worry about.

Well, today I still feel really congested on that side, which I didn't before. And I have a dull ache from my ear up to my head. Bother!! Does anyone know from experience whether this works itself out on its own? Not Happy.

sounds like you have a deviaded septum and the water got trapped. I can't use those kind of rinses. I just use saline spray to wash them out.

Oh Blast Furnace!!

I've had chills for a couple of hours now and just took my temp - it's 101.6.  I NEVER get fevers....usually I'm 95-96-something.  When I move my eyes, I can hear it in my brain - click click.  I hope it's not the flu!

Myself, I did do the steam thing and it felt good, but didn't help.

Joy, as a matter of fact I do have a deviated septum.  My doc must know this, but he told me to do this anyway.  I use the saline spray too, twice a day, (chronic nonallergic rhinitis) but I use it as a stream...have for over 20 years.

Stephanie, I know what you mean about Sudafed.  It makes me feel weird and speedy.  I've got a call into the doc to see if I can take it with all my meds, but he was gone today.  I don't know if I just have a virus, or if my eustachian tube is so messed up that a bacterial infectiion is growing.  I get ear infections once in awhile too, because I have weirdly-shaped ear canals. 

I just hope I can sleep!

Yeah, dang it all...I just saw him Monday! But luckily, he's usually easy to get into quickly. Gotta count my blessings.

Debbie, I would advise you to see an ENT (ear, nose & throat) doctor. I. had the same issue but with both nostrils. After seeing an ENT and having some tests done it was confirmed that I had a massive fungal infection in both my maximallery sinuses. I underwent surgery to remove the infection & had my deviated septum fixed at the same time. I hope this is not the case for you, but something you might want to check into.
