cipro induced fibromyalgia

Does this go away over time or is it permanent?

I started developing tendonitis pains all over my legs and arms in the months following cipro and amoxicillin (taken for strep throat). I went to two specialists and they determined cipro along with corticosteroids (I have ulcerative colitis) was the cause. I was fairly healthy before then and did not have any muscular or joint issues.

It literally feels like my life was snatched away from me and now I'm depressed that it won't come back. All because of what? A doctor who over prescribed antibiotics for a simple cold. I'm not sure how to deal with this.

I think it's the cause, too.  Here is a link from the National Institutes of Health about Cipro.

I would want to get off it.  I was getting added muscle pain from a statin medication and found that CoQ10 took care of the problem for me.

 

Try googling "CoQ10 help Cipro muscle and joint pain".  You will see things that do help and CoQ10 is one of them.  Hope this helps.  By the way, you probably don't have fibromyalgia.  It looks, from what you have said and what your doctors have said, that the culpret is Cipro.

Thank you for responding. I was only on cipro for three days in February, but I had a reaction to it the first day I took it.

David Flockhart, a professor who specializes in floriquinole antibiotics said that if the side effects don't go away in a year, it's most likely permanent.

My husband had a reaction like that to Cipro.  There's a black box warning on the drug, warning doctors to not prescribe it to people over sixty because of the tendon damage it can cause. (I guess us old geezers have more of a tendancy to fall and tear tendons??)

He gimped around for a month then it slowly went away.  I personally think this drug is over prescribed...it was given to me for a simple UTI and I refused it as Macrobid works just as well.  It's a drug that is used to treat the plague and anthrax poisoning and now doctors hand it out for every infection.  No wonder we humans have become antibiotic resistant.

I hope your problem resolves itself...sorry it happened.

Cipro is the only antibiotic I can take, but my skin becomes super sensitive and makes a washcloth feel like a wire brush on my face.

I have a good friend that happend to with one dose. She recovered slowly over a couple of years. She was so disabled she could not work.

There are many support groups for this they call themselves "floxies"

I had trouble with another floriquinole antibiotic, levaquin, I believe? (Its in some way related to Cipro). It was horrific and awful and a nightmare. (My mind created horrific morbid scenes and I didn't sleep for 3 days .. I was in a full blown panic and felt like I was in an alternate reality hell. It messed with my mood) The doctor would not prescribe me another med when I insisted I didn't want to take it. I will never take another Floriquinole again. Cipro made my FM flare up, but it luckily went away. The first time I took it, not so bad, the second, I had a stronger reaction.

I'm done with antibiotics in general.. unless I'm at risk of impending death. Then and only then will I take an antibiotic. Taking them always makes my FM worse, so I'd rather just give my body an opportunity to fight whatever it is dealing with naturally, if possible. Then meds if that doesn't work.

Have you actually been diagnosed with fibromyalgia? It's possible to have an adverse reaction to Cipro that heals over time. So I wouldn't start stressing yourself out assuming you are going to feel this way forever. It is also possible to have fibromyalgia induced by Cipro, but you are just now getting into the range where a fibromyalgia diagnosis would be considered, since you have only had these symptoms for 3 months, correct? Generally for a diagnosis of fibromyalgia symptoms must have been present at a similar level for at minimum 3 months (some doctors even say 6 months). Also is the tendinitis your only symptom? If so I would consider that Cipro-induced tendinitis, not fibromyalgia. I hope you are ok and that your condition improves <3.

Antibiotics can have terrible side effects and it makes me sad that we aren't properly warned about them. Sometimes I wonder if antibiotics were a factor in my fibro. I was taking some around the time that I developed fibro, but there were a number of other factors (for example being in an accident, opioid withdrawal, SNRI withdrawal) which I always assumed were the main triggers, but it is interesting that I took Cipro and some other antibiotics around that time. I wonder if there could be a bacterial and/or fungal connection...
