What's the funniest/ worst/ offensive comment you got from your physician?

I went to a doctor once, complaining of my pain and fatigue, and he said, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" in a tone that implied there was nothing that could be done because there was actually no pain there, in his opinion. I never went to see him again.

"Why don't you just try hypnosis?" was what another doctor said to me, quite seriously, in reference to my stress and pain.

"Just try some meditation and she'll be right," one doctor laughed at me.

I'm sure I'll think of more later...

My new regular doctor is quite understanding, open-minded and not offensive. It's taken two years to find someone so good, I'm very grateful to have finally found someone willing to help me.

My first gastro was a lovely, caring, sweet Iranian gent, who was very traditional. He worried so much that I would be by myself, and kept telling me to get married. I chalked it up to cultural differences,and loved his concern.

Anyway, on the table, he is getting ready to do a colonoscopy. He says, "You realize the easiest way to remission? You get pregnant! The entire course of the pregnancy-no disease." I, being a smartiepants, at times, said "Well, now's your chance, doc. Not going to remember it." He was initially offended, but the nurses laughed and laughed, and I told him it was the lack of food. Eventually he grinned, and said "I know, I know. I need to stop using that line."

He was just a sweetie. When I lost my insurance in 2006 (I decided to pay to keep my prescription insurance, but not my medical one.... we Americans have an insurance MESS), he insisted on seeing me pro-bono, and would let me know if in his medical opinion I needed tests or I could hold off.

I get put out, but I think Sherrine stays awake for hers. It neither hurts nor is embarrassing, in my opinion. This is what they do daily, so they have seen it all. I usually just want it over with so I can go home and go to bed.

I don't recall anyone making an offensive comment, per se, but I had (notice the past tense?) a friend who was always telling me not to take the over the counter meds and I don't think she couldn't understand why bus travel hurt me so much, etc.  After all, we had 80 year olds traveling and they were fine.  This, to me, implied that I was lying to her, being a wimp, etc.  That got real old.  I was doing the very best I could with the illnesses I had but still she knew more than I did about my pain and comfort.  Yes, very judgemental.

 

Yes, Myself and Jasmine, I was awake for my colonoscopy.  I was given medication that totally relaxed me and made it so I didn't care what happened.  That was good because I am extremely modest.  Anyway, I thought it was soooo cool!  They had a TV set up for the doctors and I could see it too.  I saw the inside of my colon and even watched them take biopsies.  I felt a tug with the biopsies but no pain.  I thought it was neat.  Yeah, I know I'm weird.

He he, you're a cheeky one, Myself. So do you get put out to it when you have a colonscopy done? I'll be getting one myself and I've been hoping they'll put me out to it during the procedure... Does it hurt or is it just embarrassing?

I had both endoscopy and colonoscopy. They put me out. The worst part of the whole experience was the prep you had to do the day before. I would suggest you start 3 days in advance, i.e., no heavy meals 3 days before you need to prep for the procedure, just do salad or soup, as little meat as possible. So when you have to start your prep, your system is already clear, and just follow the instruction and make sure you book the toilet for that day.

For some reason, they made me wait 3 - 4 hours in the pre op room before even getting me ready for the procedure. Remember to bring lots of reading material or some entertainment with you.

They are medical professional, there's nothing they haven't seen before. Besides, you'll be wearing a gown. It's definately not the time for modesty.

Wow... so many stories, I was really nervous when I had to do it. I googled, most answered to me i'll be in full sedation. Otherwise, I was going to request that anyway.

I had an anaesthetise, she took good care of me. I my procedure went well.

I had a GP when I was in my 20s and had gone in to try to get help from my migraines. This was pre-imitrex and the other better meds for migraines. He'd prescribed one of the ergotamine meds that I had to take at the beginning of the migraine or it didn't help. I said "Sometimes I wake up with Migraines, then it is too late."
He said "The pain would wake you up."

I said "Yes, it does, but then it is too late to take that med."

He retorted "Maybe you are just one of those who likes to be in pain."

WHAT?? He retired not much later, I think he had mentally retired before then.

My SIL who also has fibromyalgia was asked by her doctor "Make this face" demontrating putting his lower lip behind his front teeth.

Puzzled, she did.

"Yup, you look like a good guinea pig." and proceeded to try a new treatment on her.

My latest "doctor" who is actually a physician's assistant, is wonderful. One time when I went in with pain under my rib cage he asked me "What do you think it is?" I mentioned that was where my gal bladder was, but I didn't think that was the issue because I didn't have nausea. He agreed with me. I really like having a medical professional who respects my opinion and doesn't treat me like an idiot.

I went to six doctors about these debilitating, shooting chest pains I was having. All six of them said things like, "oh, it's probably just a muscular spasm as part of the fibromyalgia," without even examining me! I go to another doctor (the new regular one I've decided to stick with), he feels the problem spot on my chest and says, "hmm... I think you have a stomach acid problem. Here, try these tablets and see if they fix it." And the tablets work! I'd been suffering with stomach acid problems for a year with no treatment because the other doctors all assumed it was part of the fibromyalgia.

Reminder to self and doctors: NOT EVERY SYMPTOM IS CAUSED BY FMS!

I had a pharmacists tell me I had "I don't want to work" syndrome!

This was before I knew I had fibro.

Doctors giving me anti depressants and telling me my age was a contribution to my pain, before they actually decided to do any test

Anti depressant is a valid prescription as a pain management medication. Many FMS patients are on Cymbalta which is an anti depressant. In USA, Sevella is being introduced as a FMS drug which is a mild anti depressant.

Suggesting age as contributing factor to pain is definitely the doctor being lazy.

When I first went to the doctors to complain about my sore calves muscles, he suggested that it was varicose veins, and I was only 21. When I complain, he just dismisses my opinion. There are some doctors who are too set on their ways and don't want to look outside the box.

A few years ago, I wasn't feeling well for a few days and was running a slight fever, which is unusual for me, especially in Summer. the weekend was coming, and I thought I should get things checked out.

It was a Friday and my doctor was off, so I took whoever was available. He checked me out in about two minutes, did not take my temperature, no blood tests, nothing. He just said I'd be fine.

Two days later I had my emergency surgery for a burst appendix. Major OOPS, doc!
