I know others have posted about pain/tightness in the chest and ribs so I was wondering how many have had a PFT and what the results were. I went last week and it was a bad pain day so I am sure that had some bearing on my test results. My results showed my "lung age" as 76, I am only 49, other than that everything else was normal. Just curious about others having this test and their results,thanks to all who respond.

There are lots of other reasons. Are you a smoker? Do you exercise? Weight? Where do you live, in terms of altitude or pollution? Also, other conditions matter.

I do not remember ever having one.

Not sure if I had the same test, but I've had a test several times (a few years ago) where I had to blow into a container and it registered the lung function. I do remember that I was only about 1/3 of where I should have been! This was during a period of time I get every Spring, when I get asthma-like symptoms, but using an inhaler didn't help. For me, this goes away every Spring, after a few weeks. Not sure what it is!

My rheumy referred me to a pulmonologist because of scleroderma and lungs can be affected. I have mild pulmonary hypertension and have pulmonary function testing done every six months. Last year it was discovered I had lung cancer also. My lower lobe of my right lung was removed. I was never given a lung age...only know that my lung function was getting worse at each testing.

I'm doing fine and exercise on a regular basis.

Why were you referred for testing?

My GP sent me to a lung Doctor due to my shortness of breath and chest pain. Here in Canada we pay a monthly medical bill and all our Dr visits and tests are covered so a lot of the time Drs will order tests just to be on the safe side. Yes I am a smoker and I exercise as much as I can with Fibro (mainly walking), my weight is within the normal range for my height (145 lbs on a 6' frame). My GP said my symptoms were probably due to Fibro and the lung Dr agreed, although quitting smoking was also suggested by both.

Then, it likely is the combo of the two. I am a reformed smoker (17 years quit). I have occasional chest pain that is definitely fibro linked. It is very occasional.

Breathing difficulties is a listed symptom of fibro...but I was wondering if you had chest x-rays or Ct scans done to rule out other possibilities. Really, I'm not trying to scare you. I just think it is good to take precaution. I've found out not everything is related to fibro.

I have had both an xray and ct scan done with nothing showing up. My pain/breathing problems are only there occasionally. My Dr is very good at ruling out other things before saying it is fibro related. I was just curious if others were told their lung age. Thank you to all who replied.

I've been told due to my asthma my lung capacity was 85%.

A person can function fine with a half of a lung. They can't run marathons but they can live a somewhat normal life.
