I've had 30+ kidney stones (the largest one to pass on its own was the size of a small pea - seriously), and sometimes the smaller ones can hurt as much or worse than the larger ones.
There are a lot of factors that are involved in how much pain a stone causes. Sometimes the smaller ones block the ureter completely, causing intense flank/kidney pain because the urine flow is blocked, where a larger irregularly shaped one may actually hold the ureter open, allowing urine to flow freely.
If the stone is extremely jagged, it will definitely scratch as it moves, causing pain. Sometimes the contractions of the ureter as it tries to push the stone out causes the pain. And sometimes the type of pain you feel depends on where the stone is stuck. If it is stuck at the spot where the ureter enters the bladder (common "stuck" spot), you might have intense bladder discomfort.
Having said all of that, I do think fibro can exacerbate the pain, but ANY kidney stone can cause a lot of pain, and I can't believe that a doctor actually told you they shouldn't hurt. That is mind boggling to me.
I hope you feel better soon. I know how miserable it can be. Taking hot baths, hot showers, and or sitting or lying on a heating pad sometimes helps.
