Sounds like trigger points. We all have trigger points, I believe. I have used massage of the trigger points to help me. I have a wonderful book called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook that shows your what trigger points are causing your pain. They are diagrams. I have corrected a frozen shoulder using this technique plus have helped ease pain when something is really bothering me. I just look up the area of pain and it shows where the trigger points are that could be causing the pain.
Many times the trigger points are further away than you would think. We have a lot of referred pain. Example. I had bad pain in my side and was awakened by it. I couldn't get comfortable and had trouble breathing comfortably so I got up, got my book, saw the trigger points were actually in my back. I got out a tennis ball and leaned into the tennis ball and then moved like I was getting a back massage in the area. I did this for about ten minutes...max...and the pain was lessened a lot. I was able to get back to sleep and when I got up the next day I didn't have pain in my side.
Hope this helps.
