Here's my line of thought.
If you have a chronic condition, and you feel it getting worse, it's time to go see whichever doctor treats you for this condition. It really should never get so bad as to have to go to the ER, if you are responding to your body properly.
If something new happens that is not related to the chronic condition, 9 times out of 10 you are better off seeing your own doctor, who is conversant in your condition, and knows your history.
ERs are overpopulated. Their doctors are specialists in emergency medicine, meaning the unexpected due to accident, sudden illnesses, etc. But when people come in with true emergencies, they have to wait, if the ER staff is tied up with 'other' patients. I have been to the ER four times in the past decade. Once with serious abdominal pain (undiagnosed crohns), once with my Mom for an infection from her breast drainage, and then twice with MRSA. The first time, they doubled my antibiotic that my PCP had started me on, the second they admitted me.
Alright, I am sounding preachy. But the line between primary care and emergency care is getting weirdly blurred
