Hi all, I happened upon this forum the other night and today actually had a really good reason for joining because my doctor's office did something I feel is unprofessional and inhumane, and I am just feeling really lost and alone.

I am in my mid 60's and I've had post polio and fibromyalgia since I was about 36 years old. I am going through a really bad patch that just seems to be getting worse.

Its about 5 am here so I am really tired, but I just wanted to say hello. Cheers, everyone.

Welcome to the fibromyalgia forum. I am glad you have joined us but sorry for the reason. Out of curiosity, what did the doctor's office do? I am just curious.

When you get a chance, check out the first thread on the forum called "fibro 101". It is full of all kinds of awesome information.

You have been suffering from fibromyalgia for a long time, please share with us some of your coping skills. I feel you are probably very wise about it.

It sounds like you could use people who understand what you're going through right now. You've found the right place!  We are here to help answer eachother's questions, commiserate, and just generally lend an ear and a shoulder.  I was so happy to find it.

Your timeline isn't too different from mine.  I was also diagnosed at 36 (I think) and had been suffering for several years by then.  I'm 59.

Yes, what did happen at your doctor's office?  I know that can make or break my day - or week.

Hi, 60slady, and welcome! I'm in my 60's also. I developed fibro right before my 40th birthday and I'm now 66 years old. I'm sorry about the post polio situation. I know that can be difficult. My dentist had that problem and would get tired and sometimes had a problem walking. Add fibro to that mix and that makes life even more difficult.

I'm sorry that your doctor did something unprofessional and inhumane to you. It obviously hurt you quite a bit and no one should be treated that way...especially from a hired employee! Yes, you read that right. You "hired" your doctor to help you and you pay them well. If you don't like what you hear or if you feel you are not being treated properly, fire them and fine a good doctor that will have compassion and help you. There are plenty like that out there but you need to do your homework.

I found my excellent rheumatologist by talking to my friend who has arthritis plus I asked my hairdresser. The hairdressers seem to know all that's going on in the area because their customers discuss so many topics while having their hair done. My hairdresser had a customer with rheumatoid arthritis who told her how wonderful her rheumatologist was. So, she stopped cutting my hair and called that customer to get the doctor's name. Well, it was the same doctor my friend had mentioned so I went home and made an appointment. There are also a couple of sites where people will give doctor reviews....healthgrades.com and vitals.com. I checked there too and he was highly rated.

I think we might be able to help you here in other ways! We have wonderful members who love to help one another and, as a bonus, we really do care about each other, too. I think you will like it here.

You probably know already that what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another when it comes to fibro. It's more a trial and error situation. But we all share what we do that helps us and this way you will have lots of things to choose from. For me, I like to keep things as "natural" as I can. I use ibuprofen with food, Tylenol, magnesium malate, vitamin D3, and a prescription muscle relaxer, Robaxin, that has helped me significantly. I also walk daily and swim in the warmer weather and I pace myself when doing things. All of the above has helped me live a full and enjoyable life in spite of this illness. I'm sure others will come on with other suggestions, too.

I see that Karen directed you to Fibro 101...the first thread on the forum. There are lots of goodies in that thread and you might pick up some info to help you. There are links about the supplements and vitamin that I mentioned and how these work in your body. There are gentle stretching exercises and when you first open the thread there is an interview with one of the top doctors studying fibro and what they think could be causing this illness. So, you will learn a lot. I know I'm still learning new things about fibro.

Hi Ladies, Thank you so much for your warm welcome. I didn't really get any sleep so I will keep this short for now.

Basically, I was informed by a PA, who I have seen twice, that a medication protocol I have successfully used for 5 years, upon which I am dependant, is about to be taken away from me.

I was informed of this via a voice mail message delivered by the office front desk receptionist. I returned the call and protested only to be told that "she just does what she is told"

I've been with this office for over a decade, had this medication signed off on by the wonderful PA I was seeing at the time, with whom I signed an ethics contract, and the resident under whose auspices the office functions, and, independently by one of the city's leading pain management specialists, who is a stickler about medication misuse.

But, a fairly new graduate thinks he knows better.

I asked this receptionist to have the resident call me about this, and she told me he "can't do that".

Out of the blue, between appointments, never having had any issue with it.

In my opinion this method of practicing medicine is really unprofessional. And hurtful. And unfortunately, it's not easy to get an appointment with a whole new clinic. It's just very frustrating.

So I am hurting, angry and tired.

Welcome to the forum! We're a great bunch of fibromites who understand what your going through. I know how hard it can be when a Dr. Doesn't perform professionally. There are so many out there that seem not to care anymore. When you do find a good one, hang on to them. Lol

Many of us have had fibro for years and with multiple medical problems. We all have our different treatments, but some are similiar to others. I find the more I keep my treatment simple the better I am. I still occasionally have some rough days. I am just blessed that I don't work anymore.

The best tool I have learned here is do things in moderation. I have turned my negative attitude into a postive one. I learned this from the forum. I have fairly good control now through this forum. It took some time to perfect it, but all worth it.

Hi Debbie, Thank you so much for your sentiment, that's how I feel.

Angel, one thing I have learned is no one deserves to see my behind. If anyone thinks I'm going to freak out or show up unannounced to demand a showdown, they are sadly mistaken.

I fortunately just refilled a month's supply of this medication, so I can afford to take it slow.

If this had happened without my meds, I would have gone to the nearest emergency room. I just will not allow anyone to force me to suffer. Even though I am physically ill from the stress of the incredibly impersonal, unexpected and frankly, incorrect assessment made by this person who is a new provider.

I had such a good day on friday. I just got a new memory foam mattress, a steal on craigslist. I slept so well and woke up ready to live life to the best of my ability. I had 2 hours of feeling good about my life and then I decided to check my voice mail.

I am really glad I had those 2 hours. I am recovering from 2 bouts of a bad cold in 6 weeks, and the loss of my dog last summer, who I still grieve over terribly..but I felt like a human being that day.

I'm holding on to that.

I am sorry to hear about your dog. I hope you can work something out with a new Dr. for your pain control. That doesn't seem right for them to do that to you. Let us know how things are going.
