shortness of breath?

Does anyone get short of breath especially when laying down at times with fibro? I had a respiratory infection did zpak and steroids finished them today and still short if breath at times. Read fibro can do that I didn't think so? Just wondering.

Hi, and welcome! I don't think I've ever heard of shortness of breath with fibro. Sometimes the muscles are so sore that it hurts to breathe, but that's not shortness of breath. I know I would be heading back to the doctor to see what is going on. Not everything is caused by fibro. It's too easy to dismiss things and say it's fibro causing them.

Be sure to read Fibro 101...the first thread on the forum. There are links of good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there.

Hi: Almost every year, about this time, I get very shallow breathing. I've had many tests (which I've flunked), but nothing specific shows up.

My doctor suspects some sort of allergy. He mentioned possibly snow mold, which I have never heard of before.
Whatever it is, I have had no luck with inhalers. I just ride it out, and it goes away in a few weeks.

My husband has had bouts of shortness of breath (he does not have fibro).  With him, it seems to be fluid accumulation, and he was given Lasix, which took care of the problem.

Hope you can find answers soon! I agree with others who say fibro usually is not connected with shortness of breath, but then again I suspect whatever I have may have some sort of connection. I would go check it out with a doctor, for sure.  It's important to know what's causing it.

Hi new kid, I also suffer from shortness of breath, especially when laying down!! So you are not alone in this. I have been dealing with it for a year now, my doctor has tried me on inhalers and it makes no difference. I finally got to see a specialist 2 weeks ago and he had a very interesting theory as to what he thinks is going on. He thinks that my vocal chords are over sensitive and blocking my windpipe. He explained that the vocal chords sit just above the windpipe and when food goes down the wrong way, such as a pea, the vocal chords close over your windpipe to catch it and then they flutter to bounce the pea back up your throat. But instead of opening back up again his theory is that my vocal chords are constantly fluttering over my windpipe making it hard to breathe (as it covers some of your windpipe in the process). I also have problems swallowing too though and Im always clearing my throat as I feel like there is something there. The specialist also said that it is quite common for people with fibro and other auto immune diseases to get over sensitive vocal chords resulting in shortness of breath and problems swallowing (I have a hard time eating these days and it has only gotten worse over the past year but it used to only happen ever now and again when it first started)

Anyway he sent me for a Bronchial Provocation test last week and apparently that will tell him whether there is anything wrong with my vocal chords and also it will show if I have asthma or not. I am currently just waiting to hear back from him about the results. Treatment is easy if it is over sensitive vocal chords, he will send me to a speech therapist to do exercises for my vocal chords which will open them back up again.
