Hello Booklvr! I am an mmj patient (pro pot advocate,) and would love to share my knowledge with you.
Marijuana in it's natural form contains no psychoactive THC. It starts out as THCA. After the plant is picked and starts to dry, the THCA slowly converts into THC. The plant material has to be heated (or dried and cured for a long time) to remove the carbon molecule from the THCA to form the psychoactive compound THC. Scientist call this action, "Decarboxylation" and you can find all kinds of info on the web. There are new strains of marijuana with very high CBD and very low THC. (THCA.) and there are over 80 cannabinoids in marijuana with medical benefits.
When smoked, (or vaped over 338 degrees,) the carbon molecule is knocked off the THCA immediatley and you get psyhoactive THC effects within minutes. The only time I smoke it, is to get an appetite before meals and it only takes a couple puffs. Other than smoking for appetite, I mainly use marijuana in tinctures, oils, and medibles, as this is the best way to really treat or cure anything. I have different ratios of THC/CBD medicine I use depending on what ailment I am suffering from at the time. THCA has medical value as well, so I like to keep it in some of my preparations.
With the government dragging it's feet on any real research, it's up to us to find all the amazing benefits of this 100% natural plant. I am proud to be one who fights for the truth.
I hope this helps and I truly hope you research more into this miracle plant like I did. Please feel free to ask me anything, and I will be more than happy to help you.
GOOD LUCK AND BEST WISHES!
