How do you get diagnosed with fibromyalgia? I have had two back surgeries for herniated discs. First when I was 18 and second at 32. I am 33 now. I always just thought all my pain was somehow my backs fault but I ache all over like I'm getting the flu. It comes and goes. I get spots on my skin that hurts if my clothes touch it. Feels like a mix between a surface bruise and burn. My teeth ache. My legs ache. Lots aches and very tired. I am embarrassed to talk about it because I'm afraid people will think I'm just being whiny. I have looking on the web and fibro gets coming up. How do I know and how do you bring it up to your doctor?

Fibro is diagnosed when everything else is ruled out.
Talk to your doctor frankly about your pain.

Hi Lisa,

I don't think I have welcomed you to the forum. Yes, fibromyalgia is diagnosed after everything else is ruled out. I would just bring it up to the doctor. Not all of them believe in it though.

Check out the first thread on the forum called "fibro 101". It has a list of symptoms there that you would probably be interested in looking at.

Hi, Lisa, and welcome! Many see a board certified rheumatologist for their diagnosis. I use both a rheumatologist and an internist. You want to make sure the doctor you choose treats fibro patients because there are still some doctors out there in the Dark Ages and don't believe this really is an illness. Avoid them like the Plague.

You will be run through a myriad of tests to rule out other illnesses that share many of the same symptoms as fibro. Right now, there is no test for fibro so it's more a process of elimination.

When you read Fibro 101, good starting links for you would be A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia, Symptoms, and What Else Could It Be. All of Fibro 101 is good so do read it.

Lisa- welcome! I would get checked out for fibro for sure. Many of your symptoms does sound like fibro. The best way to get your diagnoses is going to a rheumatologist. This way they can rule out other things too.

Please let us know how things are going. This is a great forum to learn how to manage your fibro. I hope you don't have it, but if you do you we can help you with some helpful info on fibro.

I am new here and what I have read posted by the two monitors sounds right to me. It took two years of multiple tests to diagnosis me; 13 years ago. I did not want this diagnosis at all, I wanted to be fixed! I still want to be fixed but now I have numerous others out there and in here ;) , who understand and support me.

Hi everyone, thanks for the info and the welcome. I will read through the other posts. I have been to the doctor and the doctors I think usually just assume my pain is from my back even though I just feel generally unwell. I try to keep it to myself as much as possible because I feel like no one wants to hear it so its good to have people to talk to.

Yes, isn't it? I was so happy to find this forum.

I didn't have to bring Fibro up to a doctor, because I'd never heard of it (1993, I believe) - - but I did go through umpteen docs before I found one who took me seriously - and he said that's what he thought was wrong with me.

I have herniated discs, too, and had surgery 2 years ago, so I can definitely relate to that. Ugh.

I am new to this forum or any forum for that matter. I think it will take me some time to figure the site out. I can relate somewhat to your story. I was in an accident on the HOV Lane when the driver was exiting the guard rail just malfunction and fell and hit the windsheild. I was a passagner in the car but had several herniated disc.i have been seeing a pain management Dr and he has been great. That was in 2008 Then my knee was hurt and an orthopedic Dr gave me a shot to help well I ended up with a very bad Staff infection. Then my body just started to hurt all over.i was having a hard time walking and was just so tired so i went to see a rheumatologist and he diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, spinal stenosis., spondylitis, anklodylitis, several ruptured discuss and herniated disc, double vision, and the list just keeps continues I have a torn acl, both miniskus in my left leg and a fracture tibia. This happened in May. I don't want a knee replacement and all the Dr's I have seen keep passing me over saying my injury is complicated I'm sure it has something to do with the medications I'm on. All I can say is I have a great group of Dr's that stay connected and informed with my issues. My rheumatoid is not in control so they are trying to get it controlled I'm on humira, and methotrexate not to mention methadone this is what has helped but everyday it's the same. I had to leave my job of 28 years because i just couldn't do it. I can't stand long. Depending on where you live look at the medical center for a specialist for autoimmune disease keep a journal and tell your Dr. The things you are going thru. It seemed like every 2 weeks something else would happen., and she would do a mi and it confirmed what I was feeling.just try to look everything up on the Web it will scare you. This has been very hard on my family. All of my diagnosis seemed to happen after we were hit by hurricane IKE in our new house we built from scratch.The whole house had to be gutted and rebuilt. I'm trying so hard to just put a smile on my face when it just hurts so bad. I do believe that something good will come out of this. God has a plan for all of us so i try to offer my pain up to God . I hope you can find a really good doctor that can help you out.I will pray for you to have comfort and peace and know that God already has a plan for you. Take care. Many Blessings, Flowersun

My doctor put me on Lyrica. It helped me but I am still so sore all over my body but I am not in the pain all the time like I was. I take three lyrica a day. One in the morning and two when I go to bed. I really wonder if it will ever get any better than this.
