Strange neck clunk

This is a strange one...

I may have mentioned it before, but does anyone get a rather strange "clunking" in the top of their neck / bottom of head?

Clunking is the only way I can describe it, as thats what it sounds like inside..I can just be sitting there and it does it, without me moving it....its like an involuntary contraction / spasm but only lasts seconds...only problem is, its happening more frequently... It also makes my head move a little when it does it, a bit like a tic.

I get all the usual grinding / clicking noises when I turn my neck also...

It only seems to happen when im sitting still or relaxing and sometimes wakes me from sleep?

Im on the neurology list in UK, its NHS, so we have rather long waiting lists! Just wondered if anyone else had this rather unusual symptom?

Yes I can feel the bumps, they feel very hard like bone though? Tender to touch also...I will give it a massage and see if that helps...Perhaps its also a trapped nerve of some sort.

My shoulder has started to do the same clunks whilst im relaxing...maybe I just need one big massage...this is something I haven't tried yet since fibro, have been too scared of pain after :o(

Sherrine gave you great advice. Sometimes it helps me to wear my heated (what I call) 'bed buddy' "cape" which I microwave and wear around my shoulders. It helps my shoulders, neck, and the back of my head. In fact, I'm using it right now, since I have a slight headache, and it feels really comfy.

Hello, I would definitely go to a doctor about this. The neck really is no joke and self techniques can be dangerous. The hard bumps in your neck are probably your spinous processes which are bones and they can feel tender when you touch them if your neck is in dysfunction. You probably do have knots or trigger points in your neck too but massaging them will only temporarily make you feel better. It will not solve the problem. They are caused by either an imbalance in the muscles or because the bones in your neck are either too stiff, or move too much. Your muscle then kind of clenches up to protect that spinal segment creating a big ball of tension, or the trigger points. You can massage them away for a day, but because your muscles will want to keep guarding the segment, the ball of tension will keep returning. My best advice is to go to your general practitioner and describe the clunk in detail because it sounds like something that could potentially be serious. At the very least, go see a Physical Therapist. They are equipped to handle a situation like this.

I feel? or hear? The same thing. Like clunk clunk. Best way I can describe it. I also have fibro Wackers. I thought I was crazy!! Have been looking for years trying to find someone who knows what I am talking about. Mine happens when I move my head left to right and is more on my head than neck though. I also have degenerative joint and disc disease, Lupus Sle, Connective Tissue Disease and on and on. I have had a disc replaced with a cadaver bone and bracket in neck. This happened before and after though. I also have a spinal chord stimulator in my back. Dont think any of that is causing it. At least I know there is someone else who has been feeling or hearing it too!

Is anyone still out there with this problem?

I done all the massage, heat and it doesn’t help. The clunking is still there.
His feels like some crazy instability....

If I lay my head over a bed, or over a rolled towel ... clunk off like a separation... if i tense my muscles it will clunk back.
