Can anyone suggest an ear ache relief?

Ever since I got fibromyalgia I have had an off and on earache. Always the left ear.

Seeing a doctor now isn't an option since I am going out of town. I know they don't last long and should be gone by tomorrow but in the meantime does anyone have any wisdom to share?

is your jaw muscle by that ear tight? How about your neck, below the affected ear? if they are tight, they will cause my ear to hurt. I use either of these two, which are prescrption only in the U.S.

Voltaren gel, reapply.
Flector patch. ( it has the same medicine in it) Very expensive on my medicare insurance, (I can no longer afford)but works better cuz its continuous release (for 12 hrs). Had an earache from the jaw/neck just last week. Was gone very very quickly---I had just found some old boxes of the flector patches under my bed, while packing to move. Happy day.

Try moist heat on the ear. If it's muscle or inflammation the moist heat will soothe it.

This has more to do with ear pain while flying in an airplane, but I've tried the Styrofoam cup method and it seems to help general ear pain or ear congestion from a head cold, too: http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2011/08/18/airplane-descent-causes-excruciating-ear-pain/

One huge caution:  Note it says to just use one paper towel in each cup and also make sure ALL water (and it will be HOT!) is drained out before you try this, or you'll obviously get burned (the first time I tried it, I had just a little excess water and even that little excess was enough to hurt!).

  What I do instead is wet each paper towel, ring out THOROUGHLY so there's absolutely no excess water at all, and then put each in the cups, then microwave.  It still works well with just that little dampness on the paper towels.

Of course, see your doctor soon if the problem doesn't clear up.

I remember flying as a little girl and *screaming* because the pain was horrific. The nice flight attendant gave me the cups with wet napkins and it helped so much.

I've had numerous ear infections, ruptured ear drums, and three sets of tubes by age 10.

My mother-in-law swears by a letting a drop or two of warmed olive oil roll into the ear canal and massaging the area. I let her do this to me once, and it actually was pleasant (I was desperate for pain relief and we were in the mountains)...

I do not recommend those ear candle things.

I suffered with ear aches my whole life. I've never heard of the paper cup method, what is it?

The muscles by it are fine.
The olive oil thing I have heard of but never tried. How many of you have tried it? Is there a chance it can make it worse or will it just be better or the same? I'm not really sure how you do it. If I put the oil on a rolled up napkin can I make sure there is very little on it so that if it drips off there will be only one that goes into the ear? And when/how would I heat it?

I've never heard of this styrofoam and paper total thug before. I'm definitely using it next time I fly. I had tubes in my ears as a child and thus have horrific head explosive pain every time. I usually chew gum and slam a couple of stuff cocktail before descending and just hope for the best. I also have had success with taking cold medication 2 hours before descending.

Doing fine now. The earaches don't last long. Just annoying when they do and I never know how long it will last. Learing a lot from everyone though.

Are you clenching your jaw in pain?

I have a similar issue where I clench + have issues from allergies where one ear doesn't drain as effectively and that is the one that will hurt. I recommend that you have a doctor rule out infection (I have been misdiagnosed with an infection in urgent care, when there wasn't one).

I do clench my jaw/teeth but it isn't related to earaches. I am a daytime jaw clencher, which my dentist says is the hardest to treat. I am fine at night and don't do it then.
