I have been taking gabapentin for several years. If I don't take it, I get sharp stabbing pains in my left thigh. I had a duck-egg sized fatty tumor removed from that area. My leg goes numb and it feels as if I'm being stabbed by an ice pick. Even my pain medicine doesn't stop it (oxycodone). Only the gabapentin helps it. I take 2 each every 8 hours, and I've been authorized by my doctor to take 2 more if I'm walking a lot or standing on my feet a lot (like cooking dinner on Thanksgiving or Christmas). To me, it has been a wonder drug.
The pain I'm experiencing is not meralgia paresthetica, and I don't wear clothes that are too tight. I had an EMG on my left thigh several years ago and the doctor took a look at me, an overweight woman, and made his mind up then and there that I had meralgia paresthetica, so I don't even think he tried to find anything with the EMG. He even made the comment that, "We don't usually do EMG testing for this..." I should have said something to him. If it were to happen today, I would.
My daughter also has fibromyalgia and she recently started gabapentin. Actually, she takes more than I do, and it has helped her, too.
