UPDATE on Diagnosis

I apologize for leaving everyone hanging.

Here is the update:

After pushing my PCP, I was referred to an Orthopedic Specialist. My original back and neck x-rays were sent along with me. I was, of course, feeling better, so driving was easier, though a bit uncomfortable.

After describing to the ortho the events of the last 2 months (MRSA, C-DIFF, random fevers, the painful joints and muscles, etc), he had xrays of my hips and knees done.

Yes, I have osteoarthritis in my neck, back, and knees. He is super pleased that it's not in my hips at all (considering my weight).

But, he was really interested in the spasms in my neck and spine. The xrays that show these are from when I was in the most pain. He said (the ortho) that this evidence, combined with my other symptoms, leads him to believe I had viral meningitis!!!!

No one took me seriously though. I went to two ERs, talked to my PCP, and all I got was "fibromyalgia." No tests were done, nothing.

So, I was released to go back to work the next day, and while at work, I get a call from the ortho. He said he looked through my records from December 10 (first episodes of high fever), and said, he is sure that's what it was. The intense pain, fever, stiffness last about 9 days, and viral meningitis lasts for about 7-10 days. He was a bit irritated because he said, had it been bacterial I could have been in the ER on a respirator, or, dead.

Yes, I am looking for a new PCP.

After that period of time, I am pretty much back to normal. I have creaking in my back, a little in my neck, but hips and knees are great. I just make sure I don't sit for more than an hour or so, and I am losing weight.

Crazy thing, that week that I couldn't get out of bed...I lost 10 pounds! I couldn't get to the fridge! LOL!

Thanks for sharing your story. I am in a similar situation and you motivated me to do something about it. I dont think I am in as bad a spot, but this is a word to the wise not to let things go. I had 2 visits with a Rheumy and they havent evn touched me or looked at my arthritis or the swelling in my upper arms. She said Fibro,gave me Lyrica, and asked which doc could take over the Lyrica.

Very happy you have answers, and are on the mend! Your "case" sounded so severe to me that I was wondering how you could get through each day…wow, viral meningitis. So glad it is over…take care of yourself and don't forget about your friends here :)
